Gattaca is often described as a warning against genetic determinism. Its subtler point is that prediction need not be false to become oppressive. Vincent does have a dangerous heart. Probability becomes domination when institutions treat a population-level risk as a complete biography of one person.
The film pairs him with Jerome Morrow, whose engineered excellence cannot survive second place. Each possesses what the other cannot use alone. Their arrangement exposes both the power of bodies and the violence of the single scale by which bodies are ranked.
