Edition note: An independent English rewriting for viewers of Andrew Niccol’s 1997 film Gattaca. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.
Vincent and Anton play chicken in the sea: swim outward until one turns back. The engineered younger brother expects to win because the contest appears to measure what his body was designed to possess. Vincent eventually wins and rescues him.
Years later Anton investigates a killing at Gattaca and discovers Vincent’s fraud. He warns that Vincent does not belong and may die. The concern is sincere, not merely jealous. In the world they share, the genetic report is the responsible basis for that judgment.
They enter the water again. Anton falters and asks how Vincent can keep going. Vincent answers that he never saved anything for the swim back.
The line is often converted into motivational escalation: Vincent has more courage, works harder, wants it more. That interpretation replaces genetic ranking with a ranking of will and keeps both brothers on one scale.
The film suggests a difference in destination. Anton swims outward in order to win and return to shore as the winner. Vincent swims toward a place beyond the shore that has classified him. “Back” does not carry the same value for them.
At final screening, Vincent lacks Jerome’s sample and expects exposure. Dr. Lamar reveals that his own son has not fulfilled the promise of an excellent profile and admires “Jerome.” He records a passing result.
The scene does not establish exactly when Lamar first knew, though it strongly implies longstanding recognition. His decision is a human intervention within a system that pretends specimens decide by themselves.
While Vincent boards the mission, Jerome puts on his silver medal and enters the incinerator. The death should not be romanticized as the necessary completion of Vincent’s victory. Yet the medal’s meaning has changed. Jerome wears what he once hid, no longer asking it to certify first place.
He also leaves years of samples, carrying his role in Vincent’s future beyond his own final act.
Vincent does not prove that genes are unreal. Jerome does not prove that excellence is worthless. They expose the mistake of forcing lives with different purposes into a single ordering.
Anton’s shore, Vincent’s stars, and Jerome’s final possession of the silver medal cannot be ranked by one instrument. Freedom begins when the measure stops pretending that every person is traveling toward the same finish line.

海边。两个男孩站在水里，看着远处。
规则很简单：往外游，谁先掉头回来谁输。
弟弟每一次都赢。
哥哥每一次都是先转身的那一个。他游回岸边，坐在沙子上喘气，看着弟弟慢慢游回来。
这个游戏在片中出现了三次，是全片的骨架。
它表面上比的是胆量，实际上比的是身体——谁能游得更远还有力气回来。
而这两个男孩的身体，一个是被设计出来的，一个不是。
结果从来没有意外过。
后来有一次，哥哥没有掉头。
他一直往外游。
弟弟先撑不住了。弟弟往回游，游到一半，沉了下去。
哥哥把他拖了回来。
那天之后，文森特离开了家。
盖特卡出了一桩命案。警方来查。
负责查这个案子的警官，是安东。
两兄弟在那栋楼里重逢。安东认出了他，不能相信。他质问他，说他在冒充别人，说他这样迟早会害死自己。
他说了一句很关键的话，大意是：你不属于这里。
这句话不是威胁。安东说的时候是着急的，甚至是关心的。
他真心认为这件事对他哥哥没有好处。
两个人又下了海。
还是那个游戏。往外游，看谁先回头。
这一次安东又输了。他在很远的地方停下来，喊他哥哥的名字，问了一句：
你到底是怎么做到的？
文森特说的意思是：
我从来没有为游回去留过力气。
这句话被引用过很多次，通常被理解成：他更拼，他更豁得出去，他把命都押上了。
按这个读法，文森特赢的原因是他在同一件事上做得更狠。
而这样一来，他还是在那把尺子上，只不过刻度换了一个。
那把尺子原来量的是身体，现在量的是意志。而它仍然是一把尺子，仍然是把所有人排成一列，仍然是在问谁更强。
我认为这句话说的不是这个。
请看这两个人各自在这场比赛里要什么。
安东要的是赢。
这个游戏对他来说，是一次关于自己是谁的确认——他是被设计出来的那个，他是本来就该赢的那个。所以他必须游得更远，然后回来，站在岸上。他要回来，因为岸上才有那个位置。
而文森特要的不是赢这场比赛。
他从小就被判定为不合格。他从来没有进过那个排行榜。他不需要通过赢过谁来确认什么，因为那个位置从一开始就没有他的份，他也早就不指望了。
他要的只有一件事：到那个地方去。
一个打算回来的人，必须留力气。这是理性的，是对的，任何教练都会这么说。
而一个不打算回来的人，不需要留。
这不是勇气的差别，是目的地的差别。
安东的目的地是岸边。
文森特的目的地在另一个方向。
那把尺子能测的是一个人能游多远、还能不能回来。它测不到的是：这个人根本没打算回到量他的那个岸上去。
发射前的最后一道检查。
文森特把手指伸过去。那天他没有带杰罗姆的血——他已经准备好被抓住了。
医生看了一眼结果，然后开始跟他聊天。
他说起自己的儿子。他说他儿子的资料也很不错，但是没有达到当初承诺的那样。他说他儿子也想干这一行。
然后他说：他一直很崇拜你。
他按下了通过。
这个人从一开始就知道。
他每天为文森特做检查，每天看到那份结果，每天放他过去。他从来没有说过一个字。
那天，两件事同时发生。
文森特换上飞行服，走进那条通道。
而在那间公寓里，杰罗姆把地下室的门打开了。
他给文森特留了很多样本，够用很多年——他说够两辈子。
然后他做了一件事：他从抽屉里拿出那块银牌，戴在脖子上。
他坐进了焚化炉。
这个结尾常被读成：一个人实现了梦想，另一个人绝望地死了。
而这两件事的形状是一样的。
杰罗姆戴上那块银牌，是这部电影里他第一次承认那块牌子是他的。
他这一生，那块银牌是一个耻辱的证明——它证明他没有拿到该拿的那一个。他把它锁在抽屉里，他不看它，他为它走到了车前面去。
而在最后那天，他把它戴上了。
那块牌子还是那块牌子，第二名还是第二名。变的是他不再用那把尺子量自己了。
把这三篇合起来看。
一个人出生时被判定为不合格，预期寿命三十点二年，学校不收，保险不保，工作只有打扫卫生。他没有试图证明那份报告是错的——那份报告没有错。
他做的事情是：去了一个那份报告说他去不了的地方。
另一个人出生时被判定为完美，各项指标最高一档，游到了世界级。他输了一次，然后一切都塌了。他没有试图重新赢回来——他赢不回来，那件事已经过去了。
他做的事情是：把那副他自己用不上的完美，交给了一个用得上的人，然后每天为这件事爬一次楼梯。
这两件事不能互相比较，因为它们不在同一个刻度上。
而它们是同一种事：一个人找到了一件只有他能做的事，然后把它做完了。
飞船升空。文森特在旁白里说了最后一段。
他说，对一个本来不该属于这个世界的人来说，他忽然发现自己有点舍不得离开。
然后他说了一句关于星辰的话，大意是——人们说，我们身体里的每一个原子，都曾经属于某一颗星星。
他说：也许我不是在离开。
也许我是在回家。
