In a dream, one room belongs to two cities, a dead relative walks in, and years rearrange themselves between sentences. We rarely object. Only on waking do the contradictions become embarrassingly obvious. The strange part is not merely that dreams are strange. It is that strangeness so often passes without protest.
Dreams make a useful distinction visible: having an experience is not the same as checking the world the experience presents. Fear, color, pursuit, desire, and choice may all be present while the comparison against stable memory and shared fact is weak. The story keeps moving, and movement supplies enough temporary credibility.
Daylight does not free us from this structure. Familiar stories can also run without inspection: "He always dismisses me," "Nothing will change until I finish this," "This is simply the kind of person I am." Such claims may contain truth. The danger begins when every new fact is recruited to confirm them and no possible fact could revise them.
The lesson is not that everything should be doubted every minute. Trust and default assumptions let a common world continue. It is that defaults need a door through which reality can re-enter. What have I left out? Would this account survive another person's description? What evidence would make me change it?
Dream emotion deserves the same care. Waking frightened does not mean the dreamed danger exists, but neither is the fear imaginary in the sense of never felt. "I experienced fear" and "the thing I feared is happening" are different judgments. Confusing them denies either feeling or reality; separating them makes room for both.
Nor does a dream automatically reveal the truest self. Its images may matter, but they do not arrive with a certificate of interpretation. They are material for reflection, not orders or verdicts. Waking restores a wider court of appeal: durable objects, other minds, shared history, and consequences that do not change to keep a story elegant. The dream was experienced. It simply no longer gets to decide what this world requires.
