When Troy comes home with the baby, Rose does not immediately reach for her. He is in the yard; his wife is on the porch. The child's mother has died. Now he must ask the woman he has betrayed to help him care for the daughter of that betrayal. There is something necessary about his arrival: a father is bringing his child home. But there is nothing simple about the word home, or about whose work will make it one.

August Wilson sets Fences in a Black household in 1950s Pittsburgh. Troy earns his living collecting rubbish. Racial exclusion has shaped his opportunities and his account of the baseball career he might have had. He knows hard work, humiliation, and the effort of keeping a family fed. Rose's days have helped sustain that family too. The house is not a refuge that appears whenever Troy needs somewhere to come back to. Someone has been living and working there while he has been elsewhere.

The baby cannot understand any of this. Nevertheless, decisions about her threaten to become answers to questions about the marriage. If Rose takes her, does that mean she has taken Troy back? If she refuses, will the consequences fall on a child who has done nothing? Either interpretation would make Rose's position intolerable. She would have to surrender her hurt to demonstrate kindness, or withhold kindness to make her hurt visible.

Troy's request brings several unfinished matters together. There is his responsibility to his daughter, the injury he has caused his wife, and the child's immediate need for care. These things do not keep the same hours. A baby cannot wait for a marriage to be settled. Yet urgency cannot settle it on the adults' behalf. Rose is being asked to make a practical decision before everything that bears upon it can possibly be resolved.

Troy's appeal need not be insincere to place this burden on her. A person can genuinely need help while failing to see the full circumstances of the person being asked. Bringing his daughter home is a step towards responsibility. It is not an entitlement to another person's labour. He can ask Rose to help; the part of that responsibility she is willing to share still requires her answer.

Rose gives one. She agrees to care for the child and takes her from Troy. Then she tells him that the baby now has a mother, while he no longer has a woman. Carrying the child, she turns and enters the house. The order matters. She has already accepted the baby when she draws the boundary with her husband. She does not hand the child back to make her refusal forceful enough to be understood.

Her action therefore has more than one meaning, without being confused. The daughter is welcome. The former terms of the marriage are not. The hand extended to the child has made no promise about Troy's place beside Rose. Kindness towards one person is not a message that someone else may translate into reconciliation.

Calling this simply an act of forgiveness would make the child an instrument in the adults' exchange: Troy acknowledges her, Rose receives her, the household recovers. But she needs care regardless of whether her father deserves to be forgiven. Rose can begin a relationship with her without first declaring the injury acceptable. A child's claim on attention need not wait for a satisfactory ending to the story of her arrival.

There is another tempting description: Rose is extraordinarily self-sacrificing. That may sound admiring, but it can return the scene to Troy just as quickly. The greater his offence, the greater her generosity; her life becomes the measure of what she can absorb from his. Meanwhile, the person in her arms is not a moral test. She will grow, acquire preferences, make demands, and become known to Rose in ways that cannot be reduced to Troy's mistake.

Nor does a clear boundary perform the practical work that follows. Feeding, sleep, illness, and the routines of a household still need someone's time. Rose's sentence protects the meaning of her decision. It cannot spare her the cost of carrying it out. The scene offers a distinction, not a method by which every competing need can be met without loss.

Two months later, Rose is preparing to go to church. She will not be drawn into the conversation Troy wants, but she tells him that his supper is on the stove. That small domestic fact resists a clean account of separation. She has withdrawn the intimacy he expects; not all the work of maintaining the household has left her hands.

The supper does not prove that her earlier refusal was merely anger that has passed. Equally, her refusal does not make the supper cease to be work. People who remain in the same house continue to do necessary things. Every meal cannot carry a fresh declaration about the entire relationship. This is precisely what makes it possible for someone who wants the old arrangement back to misread the evidence: the food is there, Rose is there, therefore nothing essential has changed.

What has changed is the meaning she permits others to assign to her presence. Staying does not give Troy possession of all her future hopes. Caring for his daughter does not undertake to relieve his loneliness. Neither acceptance nor refusal settles itself permanently in a single gesture. Both have to survive the ordinary days in which other people may prefer to understand them differently.

This is Rose's decision, made within her particular life. It is not a standard to impose on another betrayed partner. A child's innocence does not tell us who has the resources to provide years of care. Admiration becomes coercive when it skips that second question and leaves the injured person responsible for proving that nobody else need suffer.

Near the end of the play, Raynell is seven. On the morning of Troy's funeral, she is concerned about her small garden and the things she has planted. They have not grown quickly enough. Rose has preparations to make and a child to get indoors, but there is also this impatience to answer: growing takes time.

The garden does not certify an untroubled childhood. It gives Raynell something of her own to care about. The baby whose origins once occupied the adults' conversation now has a concern that is not merely an extension of theirs. Even on a day of death, the household contains a question about what might grow.

That possibility was not contained in a restored marriage. It began with a welcome that could coexist with a refusal. Rose took the child indoors; Troy remained responsible for the different answer his wife had given him. What followed would include labour and loss, but also the small, accumulating business of a child becoming herself. Those days need not all be named as the forgiveness a man received.
