A Stopping Point Is Not Stalling
Two Layers First
For handling still inside the scope, the registrable technical destinations are three: terminus, stopping point, removal. If object correction or object dissolution first takes the case out of scope, it does not enter those three at all.
Object correction: it later turns out the entry judgement never held. What is cancelled is the earlier classification. Object dissolution: the entry judgement did hold, but I have since completed a genuine first-person revision or exit, so that the original incompatibility of action no longer obtains. Where no joint reading has formed, this is not a terminus; the original object simply leaves the scope from here on. If both sides then jointly confirm the new compatibility, that registers as revision consensus — taken from the moment of joint confirmation, not backdated to write an earlier one-sided dissolution into a terminus that existed at the time.
One further operational limit. I can confirm a genuine revision on my own end. If the change occurred only on the other's end and the reciprocal process is still unavailable, I cannot certify for him that his source layer has changed — I can only re-judge, from the visible relation of action, whether the object is still activated.
Back to the three destinations. These three are not three endings; their identities differ. Consensus and mutual acknowledgement of incommensurability are termini, attained by both parties. A local stopping point is not a terminus — it is the deactivation of the current incompatibility of action. Removal is not a terminus either — it is the ending of this handling's run inside the original relationship, or its transfer to a procedure.
Five Words, Each With Its Own Use
Five words below each have their own use and may not be swapped. Everyday words — over, wrapped up, done with, not holding it against anyone — are not enough to designate any of them.
A pause is not a form of removal; the two are listed separately. Where the object still holds and a registrable technical destination is obtained, it is one of terminus, stopping point, removal. Handling may also rest temporarily at a pause, or never obtain a technical closure at all and simply stall. Object correction and object dissolution are scope exits.
And one sentence belongs at the very front of all of this. A conflict has a recognisable object boundary and may attain a terminus. This person has no terminus. What is closed here is this one incompatibility — not this relationship, and still less this person.
Several things carried over from earlier hold throughout. None of the three destinations, and not object dissolution, ratifies the past, and none settles the harm ledger. Object correction cancels only the entry classification here; it does not write backwards the actions, relations and harms that occurred during the mistaken entry. Acknowledging the other's source position issues no licence for action. Arbitration takes disputes about action, not first-person constitution. And one terminus attained does not guarantee no conflict later.
| Word | What it is |
|---|---|
| Terminus | Consensus or mutual acknowledgement of incommensurability, attained by both parties on the reciprocal path |
| Stopping point | An explicable arrangement or condition has formed that genuinely deactivates the current incompatibility of action; does not impersonate a terminus; may reopen when the activating conditions recur |
| Removal | The original relationship no longer carries this handling, or the handling is taken up by a qualified procedure |
| Pause | The unilateral path is suspended because a stopping gate was hit; the path may be re-judged when conditions allow |
| Stalling | No technical closure of any kind has formed; silence, avoidance or backgrounding stands in for handling — not a legitimate fourth terminus |
The Two Histories of Consensus
Before reaching any of this, two things may happen first, and neither is a technical destination.
Talking further, it turns out there was no real incompatibility of action there at all: one of them thought the other wanted to be asked about everything; the other thought the first wanted every matter put to a meeting — and what the two actually cared about had never collided. This is the earlier exit happening after the fact: this thing does not belong here. It cancels the entry, not the closure. The thing judged in should never have come in. Counting it as a kind of terminus would leave people believing that deepening can always dissolve incompatibility, and that is not what deepening does.
The other is object dissolution. The thing did hold, and later one party genuinely completed a revision by his own law, so that the requirement no longer requires incompatible action. If both jointly confirmed the new compatibility, that is the second kind below, and it is a terminus. If no joint reading formed, the original object has simply left the scope — not a terminus.
The first history is arrangement consensus. Neither law changed; both jointly formed a solution under which the current action-requirements can both be realised. The household sorted into three kinds is this. This is a terminus — and this kind must have a place here, or the action-arrangement layer has no exit: the case where neither law changed and the problem is solved would have nowhere to go, and could only be misread as stalling.
The second is revision consensus. One party, or both separately, completed a first-person revision, and the new action-requirements became compatible. One or both — not necessarily both. One person re-examined his own construction in front of the other's frame of reference and changed; the other did not; and the two now fit. That is still a terminus.
Neither is constituted by the act of persuading. Persuasion may supply reasons and causally bring about one side's revision; the persuader's success does not itself constitute consensus. Consensus is constituted by each side's own first-person acknowledgement, or by an action arrangement jointly formed and separately acknowledged.
Two limits follow. Consensus does not automatically generate a third first-person legislator. The two may perfectly well have a standing rule from now on — household matters sorted into three kinds. But that rule's binding force must pass separately through each side's own law, or come from a procedure both have acknowledged. It is not a third law standing over the two. Each holding it independently does not constitute mutual legislation. And consensus does not ratify the past. It settles this incompatibility now; it does not rewrite what either side did before.
Mutual Acknowledgement of Incommensurability
The second terminus needs its content written precisely, because it is the one most easily written as an empty phrase.
What mutual acknowledgement jointly confirms is not that each has certified the other's arrival. That is exactly the forbidden move; if the terminus depended on it, the whole treatise would contradict itself.
What it confirms is these two things: that the two action-requirements each borne in the first person cannot currently both be realised; and that neither party has the authority to withdraw the other's bearing of his. This is the same edition as the operational layer. The object layer speaks of two laws; the operational layer says I confirm only my own end. And what mutual acknowledgement acknowledges is bearing and non-withdrawability — not standing. I do not need to certify that he arrived in order to acknowledge that I cannot withdraw it for him.
Four things follow. Only the source position is acknowledged; no licence for action is issued. Acknowledgement does not mean his action is thereby permitted, does not mean I must bear its consequences, does not mean public rules may not limit it, and does not cancel the harm and rights ledger. That the man above acknowledges his superior also has things he cares about does not make those translations legitimate.
Acknowledging incommensurability is not acknowledging that the other is right, and not that I am wrong. This has to be nailed down, or the whole second terminus reads as splitting the difference. And incommensurability is not a failure of understanding. It is a reading taken after the shape of the incompatibility has been seen clearly, within the object boundary that deepening set. What separates it from we never got clear is precisely whether the deepening clause was walked to the end.
After acknowledgement, each keeps his own, and the relationship may continue or the two may go separate ways. Both leaving can happen after this terminus; leaving does not itself constitute it. And if shared resources, third-party responsibility or procedural obligations remain, leaving does not settle them either — they move to arrangement or arbitration.
The Local Stopping Point
The unilateral path cannot obtain a bilateral terminus. Inside the original relationship the only technical closure it can obtain is a stopping point. Beyond that it can pause or remove, but neither of those is a terminus attained on that path, and neither is a stopping point.
A local stopping point is an explicable arrangement or condition already formed, which genuinely deactivates the current incompatibility of action. The man above may have moved everything that had to be argued face to face into writing, and from then on the thing does not flare up once a year.
It does not impersonate a terminus. The relation of action-requirements that constitutes this conflict has not been rewritten at the source layer; if the activating conditions recur, both sides may again require actions that cannot both be realised, and the original object can re-enter handling. A stopping point changes the action arrangement or the activating conditions, not the source standing of the two laws. And a stopping point can come from a non-jointly-generated arrangement on one side — he alone changed how he does it, and the other took no part. Once joint probing recovers and produces a jointly generated solution, one should switch back to the reciprocal path and register it as arrangement consensus.
And now the hardest place in the whole treatise, which has to be said plainly. From outside, no criterion guaranteed to close separates a stopping point from stalling.
Stalling is: no arrangement whatsoever directed at the incompatibility itself has formed; not mentioning it stands in for handling. A stopping point is: an explicable arrangement or condition has formed. To a third person the two may look exactly alike: right now, in both, there is no incompatible action, nobody brings it up, everything is calm.
On surface silence or non-mention alone, a third person cannot be guaranteed to tell them apart. Supporting evidence can be had from outside — whether the arrangements are public, whether they are stable, whether they can be observed repeatedly. But there is no criterion guaranteed to close.
There is one thing visible from outside, and its weight has to be written exactly. Declaring a stopping point while simultaneously closing every channel of review is a strong risk signal that this stopping point may only be stalling. It is enough to lower the public credibility of that declaration substantially. It is not enough to complete, for the subject, the internal classification.
Three registers, kept apart — the same shape used three times across the treatise. There are clues: the three self-checks. There is no criterion guaranteed to close: established at the start. And there are traces visible from outside: this one. None of the three may impersonate another. A clue is not a criterion, and a trace is not a verdict.
Removal
The third destination is moving the conflict out of this relationship. Removal is the original relationship no longer carrying this handling, or a qualified external procedure taking it up. It is not called a terminus. External arbitration is one form of removal. And a pause on the unilateral path is not removal: a pause is that path suspending because a stopping gate was hit, with nothing yet handed on and the original relationship not yet ended as the carrying field. The two may not be swapped.
External arbitration needs a limit drawn first, because this is where the thing is most easily turned around and used in reverse. Ceding the power of adjudication to something external is not a failure of subjecthood; it is subjecthood's sense of its own boundary. But this holds only for a certain kind of external: a procedure both have acknowledged, a mechanism with legal authority, or an institution with legitimate authority to protect basic rights.
Handing adjudication to an arbitrary external party does not automatically embody a sense of boundary. A third party chosen unilaterally by the stronger side may be no more than an extension of that side's power. If the man above were required to take the disagreement to an arbitrator appointed by his superior, that would not be removal. That would be the same thing continuing under another name.
What is ceded also has to be written precisely. What is ceded is the procedural power to adjudicate disputes about action — not the constitutive power over one's own law. Arbitration may decide who uses which resource when, which action may be carried out, how the procedure is arranged. It cannot decide which law is truer in the first person, and cannot decide whose subject standing is higher.
The position of institutions is clear from this. Economics P2 §5 established it: institutions do not create us; institutions lower the cost of exit. An institution can change information, incentives, the structure of contact and the conditions of safety, and so may help acknowledgement to happen — but it cannot complete acknowledgement for a subject, and cannot guarantee it. Law says you may not treat her as a means; that is the externally enforced version of an ontic command. It marks off a forbidden zone, and violating it has consequences. It is a substitute and a scaffold for when we are not there. It is not us.
