Reading Xiao Shiyilang

Three essays on a useful bad name, two people named for flawless jade, a manor that collects living dolls, and the different acts by which Shen Bijun and Feng Siniang step outside assigned roles.

Gu Long first wrote Xiao Shiyilang as a screenplay in 1969, then turned it into a novel serialized and published in 1970. Its cinematic economy suits a hero who rarely argues for himself: reputations speak loudly, actions answer quietly, and the ending refuses to certify who returns.

These readings treat the first novel’s open ending as open. Events from the 1973 sequel Huopin Xiao Shiyilang are mentioned only where they correct the tempting impression that Feng Siniang receives no answer at all. Full-novel spoilers follow.
