Doll Manor

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.

The deepest argument in the novel is made by a place called Doll Manor.

It belongs to Xiaoyao Hou. Little Master designs traps for him; killers act for him; the jianghu runs after the Deer-Cutting Saber. What Xiaoyao Hou enjoys is not merely possessing a treasure. He watches people love, suspect, compete, and die along routes he has arranged.

Doll Manor says too plainly what the wider world does more politely: living people can be collected and placed where someone else wants to see them.

Two kinds of sight in one prison

Shen Bijun and Xiao Shiyilang are confined there. The same captivity that treats them as pieces also keeps them together long enough for Shen to see conduct the name “greatest thief” cannot explain.

The manor thus produces opposed movements. Its owner reduces persons to objects of play; two captives begin to encounter one another outside the roles assigned to them.

A saber made valuable by everyone else

The Deer-Cutting Saber moves the Shen family, the Lian family, Xiaoyao Hou, Little Master, and Xiao. It is a weapon, but its greater force comes from shared attention. Each person believes everyone else will act for it, and that belief becomes a reason to act.

Xiaoyao Hou collects bodies. The saber collects eyes. One turns people into controllable objects; the other aligns their judgment until borrowed value feels intrinsic.

Feng Siniang does not barter care

Feng has known Xiao longest and understands him best. She follows, fights, and tends him while knowing his love goes toward Shen. Even when badly wounded, she urges him to rescue the other woman.

It is tempting to describe her as the person who gives everything and receives nothing. The ending corrects that simplification. Yang Kaitai follows and declares that even being beaten to death will not make him leave. Feng embraces him and asks him to remain with her, promising not to hurt him again.

The embrace does not automatically cancel her feeling for Xiao. It does show that the story has not fixed her forever in unrewarded waiting. The 1973 sequel will complicate the relation again, but the first novel already gives her an act of response.

An ending that does not certify survival

The novel does not end by declaring that Xiao and Shen live happily together. Xiao takes the road toward Xiaoyao Hou, a road the witnesses call a dead end. Shen then tells Lian Chengbi that whether Xiao is alive or dead, she will go to accompany him, and follows.

Feng remains looking down the road. The old men say Xiao is unlikely to return and perhaps neither traveller will. She insists that he will.

This is neither a confirmed reunion nor a sealed double death. Gu Long stops after each person’s act has become clear but before its result can classify the life.

Who remains more than a doll

Xiaoyao Hou wants everyone to complete his arrangement. The jianghu wants thief, gentleman, beauty, and witch to remain faithful to their labels. The saber makes “worth possessing” look like a fact that no one need examine.

The ending refuses all three closures. Xiao walks toward an opponent who may kill him. Shen leaves the proper place to follow. Feng looks toward that uncertainty while accepting the man who has arrived behind her.

Dolls have positions. Living people take one more step just when the story is ready to leave them still.
