Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
The jianghu has a list called the Weapons Register. Bai Xiaosheng ranks forty-three living masters by the weapons they use: Old Man Tianji first, Shangguan Jinhong second, Li Xunhuan third, Guo Songyang fourth, and Lü Fengxian fifth.
The register also has two exclusions. It does not rank women, and it does not rank the so-called unorthodox schools.
Before a list orders people, it decides who is eligible to appear. Someone can be stronger than every listed fighter and still be absent—not because the measurement failed, but because the frame declared that person irrelevant.
Once published, the register changes the behavior it claims merely to describe. Fourth place must test third. Second must defeat first. Anyone below the list can enter it by killing someone already named. The ranking does not issue commands, but it supplies every ambition with an obvious next target.
Li spends ten years beyond the frontier without contesting a match. His number remains. It no longer reports what he has recently done or who he has become; it is a public proxy that survives his absence.
Guo Songyang comes to challenge him because he wants to know whether Li’s dagger truly deserves the higher place. He loses and becomes Li’s friend. Later, before Li faces Shangguan, Guo goes first to test the second-ranked man’s strength. He dies gathering knowledge for the third-ranked man.
The register never orders this sacrifice. Guo supplies his own life to its sequence.
Shangguan Jinhong wants more than victory. As head of the Gold Coin Clan, he wants the whole jianghu to become a space governed by one will. Only two names trouble him: first place and third.
Old Man Tianji has largely withdrawn from fighting. He travels with his granddaughter Sun Xiaohong and earns a living telling stories. He even speaks of a level beyond holding a weapon in hand or mind. Yet when Shangguan finds him, he accepts the contest and dies. Second place becomes first.
Soon afterward, the new first place dies to Li’s third-ranked dagger. The top of the list collapses backward.
Bai Xiaosheng, meanwhile, is not listed at all. The supposedly neutral evaluator is exposed as a conspirator in the Plum Blossom Bandit plot. He has spent his life defining everyone else while operating under another rule. He dies because he refuses to believe the maxim he helped institutionalize: Li’s dagger never misses.
Jing Wuming belongs entirely to Shangguan: his sword was commissioned for him, his violence is directed by another man, and even his name means that his life is not his own. When Li spares him with a shallow wound, Jing drives the dagger deeper and ruins his own arm. He would rather injure himself than accept a debt.
A-Fei is also absent. He came from the wilderness after the register was compiled, and eventually reaches a level at which anything in his hand can serve as a sword. The list has no mechanism for admitting that its world has changed.
Then there is Lin Xian’er. Lü Fengxian, ranked fifth, agrees to kill her and cannot do it. A fighter measured as one of the five strongest men loses to a woman whom the register refuses even to describe. His failure is not a paradox. The instrument measured weapons, then let its users forget that weapons were only one part of action.
Li eventually kills Shangguan. The Gold Coin Clan fragments, and the jianghu continues. First place is vacant again; fourth is dead; fifth survives. The rules excluding women and heterodox fighters remain untouched.
This is what makes the register more durable than its author and champions. It has converted a contingent judgment into the landscape through which everyone moves. The people on it fight, die, disappear, and change. The list stays still—and makes that stillness look like truth.
