Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
A carriage enters a world of snow. Inside, Li Xunhuan coughs, then resumes carving the same woman he has carved for ten years. Each figure is finished, put down, and replaced by another.
He is heir to a celebrated household—his father, elder brother, and he himself all placed third in the imperial examinations—and the owner of the flying dagger ranked third on the martial world’s Weapons Register. Yet the story that made him famous is not a feat of arms. It is the story of what he gave away.
Years earlier, Long Xiaoyun saved Li’s life. Li brought his new sworn brother home to Li Garden, where Long fell desperately in love with Lin Shiyin. Long did not initially know that she was Li’s cousin, childhood companion, and fiancée.
Li could have told him. He could have spoken with Lin and allowed her to decide what this new fact meant. Instead, he chose an arrangement that required only one informed person: himself.
For three years he drank, visited brothels, and treated Lin with calculated coldness. A temporary absence might have left her waiting, so he made himself appear unworthy of being waited for. The plan could work only if she believed a lie—that the person she had known since childhood no longer loved her.
She eventually married Long. Li gave them his ancestral estate and fortune as a wedding gift, then disappeared beyond the frontier. The jianghu remembered this as exemplary loyalty: a man had repaid a life-saving debt with love and property.
The giver became the hero of the story. The person given away almost vanished from it.
Long receives everything and enjoys none of it. The estate was not earned; the marriage remains haunted by its former future; everyone knows whose generosity made his life possible. He renames Li Garden after himself, but a changed sign cannot make the gift cease to belong, symbolically, to the giver. If something was bestowed, its former owner may always return.
That fear becomes self-fulfilling. When Li returns ten years later, Long conspires with Shangguan Jinhong and offers his sworn brother in exchange for a place in the Gold Coin Clan. Shangguan despises traitors, humiliates him publicly, and makes him cut off a hand to survive. The man who received another person’s entire estate must finally spend part of his own body to buy back his life.
Long’s son Long Xiaoyun inherits the resentment before he can understand it. He meets Li as a child and already hates him. What passes from father to son is not an event but an accounting system: this man’s generosity is the source of our humiliation, therefore he is our enemy.
Lin has also lived inside the manufactured evidence. When rumors identify Li as the rapist and thief known as the Plum Blossom Bandit, a young stranger named A-Fei trusts him without hesitation. Lin, who grew up beside him, asks through tears whether the accusation is true.
Her question is not a failure of character. It is the delayed success of Li’s performance. He spent three years teaching her that his apparent self could not be trusted. A decade later, the lesson returns to him.
Near the end, Long attempts to undo what he has done. He takes a coveted manual to the Gold Coin Clan and tries to exchange it for Li’s life. He is killed. His final request is that Lin “return” to Li.
The story has now travelled in a circle. Years ago one man silently sent Lin toward another; now the second man attempts to send her back. Both gestures present themselves as generosity. Both assume that her destination can be settled between men.
Lin refuses. She says she will always be Long Xiaoyun’s wife, takes her son, and leaves for a place the novel does not name.
This need not mean that the first marriage was right, or that she never loved Li. It means that when the arrangement comes around a second time, she finally answers before anyone can complete it. The novel’s most famous act is Li’s giving. Its quieter and more important act may be Lin’s refusal to be given again.
