An infant dies near the middle of the novel before he can speak. His mother is Liu Ying, a favored consort of the Dali emperor Duan Zhixing. His father is Zhou Botong. Qiu Qianren strikes the child not from hatred but calculation: saving him will require Duan to spend years of cultivated power and weaken a rival before the next Mount Hua contest.
The baby is a move on a board he cannot see. Liu Ying carries him to Duan, whose One Yang Finger could save him. Duan looks at the child and remembers whose child he is. A wound to adult pride outweighs a life that has scarcely begun. He refuses.
That afternoon occupies four futures. Liu Ying becomes Yinggu, lives alone in the Black Marsh, studies martial arts and calculation, and devotes decades to revenge. Duan abandons his throne and becomes the monk Yideng, because among all the choices of his reign the refusal is the one he cannot stop choosing again in memory. Zhou Botong flees emotional responsibility. Qiu continues through a life of violence.
Years later Yinggu sends a gravely wounded Huang Rong to Yideng, knowing that healing her will cost him five years of power and make him vulnerable. He understands the trap and heals her anyway. When Yinggu arrives, he waits for her blow. She cannot deliver it. Jin Yong offers no explanation that would close the moment.
Still later, Yideng prevents Qiu Qianren from killing himself and accepts him as a disciple under the name Ci'en. The man who killed the child now studies under the man who declined to save him. This is not a tidy reconciliation. The dead infant does not return, and Yinggu's lost decades are not reimbursed.
All four adults spend the remainder of their lives answering an event in which the only person without a voice was the person used. The Black Marsh is filled with diagrams and calculations meant to defeat another mind. None can calculate a way back before that afternoon.

事情的经过在书里讲得很细。王重阳第一次华山论剑夺了《九阴真经》之后，怕自己死后没人制得住欧阳锋，就带着师弟周伯通到大理去，用先天功跟段智兴换一阳指。住在宫里的那些日子，周伯通和刘瑛有了往来，生了个孩子。
段智兴知道了。他没有杀人，也没有重罚——按江湖上的规矩，他甚至表示可以成全这两个人。
周伯通不肯。他是个武痴，不懂这些事，走了。
刘瑛一个人把孩子养着。
后来铁掌帮的裘千仞找上门来，一掌打在那个婴儿身上。
他打这一掌，不是因为恨这个孩子。他算的是另一笔账：这孩子伤得极重，救活他需要段智兴耗掉数年功力；功力一耗，下一次华山论剑段智兴就争不了第一。这是一步棋，孩子是棋子。
刘瑛抱着孩子跪在段智兴面前求他。
段智兴看着那个孩子。那是周伯通的孩子。
他没有出手。
书里把他当时的心思写了出来：他看着那个孩子，想到的是这个孩子是谁的。他是皇帝，是当世五大高手之一，一阳指救得回来；他没有救，理由是一件跟这个孩子完全无关的事。
一个大人的一点难堪，抵掉了一条还没有开始的命。
孩子死了。刘瑛一夜白了头。
这件事之后，两个人各自走上了各自的路。
刘瑛离开皇宫，一个人住到黑沼里去，改名瑛姑。她此后所做的每一件事，都是为了报这个仇：遍访高手，苦练武功，钻研奇门算术，一等就是几十年。她后来变得暴戾、阴鸷，用受伤的黄蓉去引一灯大师上钩，为的还是那一件事。
一个人的一生可以被一件事整个占满，而那件事发生的时候只有一瞬。
段智兴走的是另一条。他万念俱灰，把皇位让了出去，出家做了和尚，法号一灯。他手下的四个大臣——丞相、大将军、水军都督、御林军总管——跟着他一起出了家，成了渔樵耕读。
他退位不是为了避祸，也不是为了修行。他退位是因为那一天他没有伸手。
他这一生做过的所有事情里，只有那一件是他自己选的；那一件之后，他把别的都放下了。
后来郭靖和黄蓉找到了他。黄蓉被裘千仞打成重伤，只有一阳指能救。
一灯救她，要耗掉五年功力。
他知道这是瑛姑设的局：瑛姑算准了他不会见死不救，也算准了他救完之后功力大损，那时候她就能来报仇。
他还是救了。他跟弟子说，五年就五年。
救完之后瑛姑来了。
她见到的是一个坐在那里等着她动手的老僧。他把功力耗在了一个跟他不相干的女孩身上，正是她算好的那个时候。
她没有下手。
书里也没有写她为什么没有下手。
后来在华山，裘千仞被众人围住。他一生作恶，自己也清楚，正要跳崖，一灯把他拦下了，收在门下，法名慈恩。
那个打死婴儿的人，从此成了一灯的徒弟。
这件事在书里没有配一句解释。金庸只是让它发生：孩子的父亲不懂人情，孩子的母亲用几十年去恨，那个见死不救的人退了位，那个动手的人做了那人的弟子。
这四个人，没有一个人的一生是从自己那里开始的；他们都是从那一个下午开始的。
黑沼在很偏的地方，四面是泥沼，进出要认得路。瑛姑一个人在那里住了几十年，屋里堆的是算筹、图册、和一本翻烂了的书。
她在算的是九九八十一难那类的东西，为的是有一天能算过一个人。
