Game of Thrones: The Stories Power Tells

Ten essays on a chair that borrows its force from belief, identities taken and recovered, institutions that outlive their purpose, liberation that demands gratitude—and a finale that broke the habits the series itself had taught its audience.

Game of Thrones begins by teaching its audience not to mistake moral importance for plot armor. Once Ned Stark dies, inherited storytelling rules no longer tell us who will survive. The same suspicion should be brought to the political rules inside the story: a throne, a surname, an oath, and a title work because people continue to act as though they settle questions that remain unsettled.

The ten essays follow characters who are named by others, institutions that protect their procedures after forgetting their purpose, and rulers who confuse acting for people with receiving their recognition. The final essay turns that method back on the series itself. Full-series spoilers throughout.

Bran: When a person becomes an archive

Daenerys: When liberation asks to be repaid with recognition

The Ending: A series broke the habit it had taught its audience

For seven seasons the show trained viewers to test every claim and tolerate uncertainty. Its compressed finale supplied the verdict itself—and changed the relationship at the point of farewell.

2026Three reading modes
