本系列不讲乐理,讲乐理的道理。

西方调性乐理会告诉你这里是属七和弦解决到主和弦。本文追问的是更一般的问题:不同音乐文化怎样建立、延宕或改变听者的期待。"解决"是调性体系中的术语,不应被直接投射为所有文化共有的语法。

我不讨论作品"表达了什么"。我只讨论一个问题:为什么某些音乐能让你反复进入、反复被改变,而另一些只在第一次有效?

我把这个差异压缩成一个四步循环:生、定、展、固。

它不是一套乐理或某种风格,而是本文从Self-as-an-End生命周期表借来的审美假说:选择、构建、被凿开、重新闭合。它尝试描述音乐如何在时间中组织期待;音乐是否以这种方式打动人,仍受文化习得、专业经验、记忆、聆听场所与身体状态影响。

你不需要懂乐理。你只需要承认一件事:你听过那种"结束之后比开始更重"的感觉。

一、你已经知道的体验

先不谈任何理论。

想一首你听过很多遍还愿意再听的曲子。任何类型都可以。古典、流行、rap、民歌、电子,都行。

现在回忆一下你第一次听它的经历。不需要精确,大概的感觉就够:

开头的某个东西抓住了你。可能是一段旋律,可能是一个节奏,可能是一个声音的质感。你不一定说得出它是什么,但注意力开始集中,也许随之形成了"接下来会怎样"的期待。

然后这个期待被确认了。重复出现,或者发展了,或者副歌来了。你觉得"我知道这首歌在做什么了"。一种舒适感。你进入了它的世界。

然后某个瞬间,你的期待被打破了。

可能是一个你没预料到的转调。可能是节奏突然变了。可能是人声做了一个你没想到的处理。可能很微妙,你甚至说不清具体是什么。但你感觉到了——一个"不对",一个"意外",但不是随机的意外,而是在某种你说不出的逻辑里的意外。

然后它回来了。旋律回来了,或者某种闭合感出现了。但你的感受变了。同样的旋律,在你心理上的重量不一样了。

结束的时候,你比开始的时候多了一点什么。但你说不出那是什么。

本文把这种经验称为凿构循环。它在许多聆听中都可辨认,也可能在儿童很早的音乐经验里出现;但它不是无需检验的普遍事实,更不能用来替代各传统自己的乐理与聆听习惯。

二、生定展固

把上面那个体验拆成四步。

生。 建立期待。一段音乐材料出现,听者可能依据刚刚听到的内容和长期习得的风格经验形成预测模型。这个过程常不依赖有意识分析,但期待的对象未必总是"下一个音",也可能是音色、节奏、密度或段落方向。

贝多芬第五交响曲的开头四个音就是"生"。BTS一首歌的verse开始也是"生"。古琴曲《流水》的散板引子是"生"。Kendrick Lamar在一首歌里建立的第一个flow pattern是"生"。DJ set里build-up开始的那一刻是"生"。

材料和编码不同,却都允许我们追问:听者在何处形成了"下一步会怎样"的期待?相似的是分析问题,不是已经证明的同一神经操作。

定。 确认期待,让它成为稳定模型。重复、发展、reinforcement。听者从"我在预测"变成"我确定了"。

副歌重复两遍是"定"。赋格主题在不同声部出现是"定"。rap里同一个flow跑满一个verse是"定"。古琴曲里一个音型被反复展开是"定"。

这一步建立舒适感。但舒适感不是目的,它是为下一步做准备。你必须先有一个稳定的模型,这个模型才能被打破。没有"定"就没有"展",就像你凿不开一块还没成型的石头。

展。 打破期待。在不随机的前提下,让听者的预测模型失效。

这是最关键的一步。

贝多芬在发展部把四音动机碎片化并移入新的调性关系;K-pop的bridge可能改变节拍、调性或能量密度;Kendrick也会在verse中切换flow、重组节奏。巴赫在不同赋格中使用倒影、紧接、增值或减值等手段变换主题,并非每首都采用同一套技术。古琴曲《流水》的滚拂段落则以连续滚拂和密度变化塑造水势——听者原先把握的时间与音色关系可能由此被重新组织。

"展"的本质是:你以为你知道下一个音是什么,结果不是。但又不是随机的。它在一个你能感受到但无法提前计算的逻辑里。

被打破的那一刻,你的认知系统暴露出一个东西:余项。就是你的模型吸收不了的那个部分。"我以为我理解了这首曲子,原来没有"——这个落差就是余项。

固。 带着凿的痕迹重新闭合。

再现部回来了。最后一遍副歌回来了。古琴回到泛音的尾声。但这个回归不是简单的重复。听者已经被"展"改变了,所以同样的旋律在心理上的重量完全不同。

"固"不是回到"定"。"固"是一个新的稳定态,它比"定"多了一层东西——凿留下的痕迹。你闭合了,但闭合的内容更厚了。

这就是"结束之后比开始更重"的来源。

三、为什么有些音乐穿越周期

有了这个模型,"为什么有些音乐听一百遍还有东西"就有了一个结构性的回答:

复听常让熟悉部分的期待更精确,也可能把注意移向先前忽略的声部、音色、呼吸或制作细节。本文用"余项"描述一次聆听尚未吸收的关系;它可能持续,也可能因记忆、情境和听者经验而减少。

巴赫《平均律键盘曲集》的赋格适合说明这种可能:多声部织体让听者在不同聆听中追踪不同线条。新发现不是无限性的证明,也不意味着耳朵一次已接收全部信息;它只说明注意与记忆会改变作品中哪些关系进入前景。

反过来,有些音乐在熟悉后给某位听者的新关系较少,但不能据此说它的"信息量归零",更不能替所有听者规定第几遍耗尽。

这首先是一项结构批评,也仍包含品味、用途和情境判断。

四、两种退化

一首歌可能建立鲜明pattern后持续重复。对某些听者,重复主要确认既有期待,新关系很快减少;对另一些听者,节奏细节、身体参与或共同记忆仍能继续工作。

短视频平台偏爱能在几秒内识别的片段,但这不等于大部分短视频音乐都缺少"展",也不等于短小、重复或迅速流行必然消耗得快。本文只能逐曲判断它有没有重组已经建立的关系。

另一个假想极端,是作品不断变化,使某些听者难以形成稳定参照。实验音乐却并非天然如此:音色过程、演出规则、空间分布或聆听训练都能建立期待,随机性本身也可能形成可辨认的边界。

因此,受众大小不能作为凿构是否完整的证据。熟悉度、传播制度和进入一套声音语言所需的时间都会影响听者能否察觉construct。

"只确认、不重组"与"变化过快、参照难成"可以作为两种诊断方向;经久性作品是否位于两者之间,则是需要作品和听者共同检验的假说。

五、乐理只是编码

到这里我们还没有用过任何乐理术语来做论证。这是有意的。

乐理首先是特定共同体描述和组织音乐实践的语言。本文不是说所有乐理都暗中编码"生定展固",而是尝试用这四个坐标比较不同传统里期待怎样形成和改变。

在西方调性音乐中,属七到主和弦可产生闭合,转调可改变调性期待,动机的发展与重复可稳定或重开关系。这只是该传统中的一组例子,不能代表全部西方音乐。

中国音乐也不能被压缩成"五声音阶和板式"。不同器乐、戏曲与地方传统各有音阶、腔调、节奏和音色逻辑;散板并非没有结构,而是节拍伸缩由程式与表演共同组织。"紧拉慢唱"可以作为多重时间层的例子,却不必预先等同于"展"。

印度古典音乐中的raga也不是简单的上下行音列;它还涉及特征音、习惯乐句、装饰、时序与表演传统。有些raga上下行不同,但这种差别不自动等于打破期待,熟悉的听者反而可能准确期待它。

西非多种鼓乐传统中的复节奏能让节奏层彼此交错;巴赫赋格则组织相对独立的声部。两者可以比较"多线关系如何改变注意",但不能因此说它们在认知层面已经被证明是同一操作。

编码不同,历史和身体实践也不同;"生定展固"在这里是比较坐标,不是这些传统真正编码的唯一对象。

真正懂巴赫的人初听不熟悉的西非鼓乐仍可能迷失,因为审美敏感不能替代文化习得。跨传统聆听可以发展,但往往需要接触、学习和对自身习惯的修正。

品味与审美判断可以区分,却不能简单写成"前者主观、后者客观"。批评者可以讨论关系是否建立、偏离是否有力、闭合是否带痕,但判断仍应说明依据、听者位置与比较范围;熟悉古典或只听trap都不能自动决定审美高下。

5a、与两位前辈的对话

以上这些并非全新的洞察。音乐哲学领域在过去一百七十年里已经零散地触碰到了这头大象的不同部位。值得跟两位前辈做一个简短的对话,划出本文的位置。

Hanslick(汉斯力克),1854年,《论音乐中的美》。 他是音乐形式主义的奠基人。核心主张:音乐的意义不在于它"表达了"什么情感,而在于"音调的运动形式"(tönend bewegte Formen)本身。音乐的美是结构性的,不是指涉性的。

这跟本文的形式关注相互照亮——我们也暂时搁置"贝多芬表达了命运抗争"一类解释。但不能把Hanslick简化为"形式就是意义",也不能说本文替他补上了客观判据。更准确地说,本文借他的自律音乐观追问另一件事:某些形式关系为何在复听中持续改变注意?"生定展固"是对此提出的一个新词汇。

Meyer(迈尔),1956年,《音乐中的情感与意义》。 他做了一件跟本文非常接近的事:用"期待与打破期待"来解释音乐的意义。他的核心论点是音乐意义产生于听者期待被延迟或打破的瞬间。这几乎就是"展"。

Meyer的讨论远不只一个"意外点";他把期待、延宕、抑制与风格学习放进相互关联的心理过程。本文与他的差别在于分析尺度:这里把建立、确认、重开与带痕闭合连成循环,并用"余项"追问复听怎样改变注意。这是理论增写,不是证明Meyer无法解释结尾或重复经验。

把Hanslick和Meyer放在一起,本文获得两个支点:形式关系不能被情感标签替代,期待又来自习得的风格语法。"生定展固"试图协调这两条线,却还需要具体作品、听者与复听研究来检验。

因此,这里不是前辈各抓一条腿、本文拼出整头大象,而是一场受限的理论对话:旧概念照亮新问题,新框架也必须承认自己没有吸收的部分。

六、同构对照:贝多芬与BTS

一个是十九世纪初的维也纳交响乐,一个是二十一世纪的韩国流行音乐。两者的历史与制作制度差异巨大;本文只在凿构循环这一层尝试有限比较。

生:四音动机(短短短长)在开头数小节迅速确立。对熟悉这套语言的听者,它很容易成为记忆与期待的锚点:这个动机会怎样发展?

定:呈示部用大约一百小节反复确认这个动机。它在不同音高出现,在不同乐器出现,每次都是它。你的预测模型越来越稳定。

展:发展部开始。四音动机被拆碎了。它出现在你不预期的调性里,节奏被拉伸或压缩,乐器组之间互相撕扯。你的预测模型彻底失效——你知道这是那四个音,但你不知道它接下来会去哪。余项大量暴露。

固:再现部回来。四音动机回到主调。但你听到的不是开头那个动机了——它经历了发展部的撕裂之后,同样的音符在你的认知里变重了。闭合,但闭合的内容已经不同。

生:前奏和第一个verse的旋律线建立了一个情绪基调和节奏期待。柔和的电子音色加上人声,你的大脑开始建模。

定:Pre-chorus确认了这个方向。你觉得你知道副歌会是什么样子。

展:Bridge段。节奏变了。编曲变了。人声的处理方式变了。如果这首歌的bridge只是换一个调再唱一遍副歌,那它就是装饰性的展,不是真的凿。但好的K-pop(BTS在这方面是顶尖的)在bridge段做的是真正的结构打破——你的预测模型失效了,你不确定歌会怎样结束。

固:最后的副歌回来。但你带着bridge的体验在听,所以同样的旋律比第一遍副歌更重。

四个位置可以分别标出,编码系统却完全不同(管弦乐与电子编曲/人声,奏鸣曲式与verse-chorus结构)。所谓"同构"是本文的批评性映射,不是说两部作品的历史功能或听觉机制完全一样。

为什么两者都可能经得起复听? 本文的解释是:贝多芬发展部的织体关系与BTS "Spring Day"的音色、段落和情感转折,都可能让不同细节在复听中进入前景。余项是否持续、持续多久,要由具体听者检验,不能用五十遍或三十遍作客观量尺。

七、异构同效:巴赫赋格与古琴《流水》

如果说贝多芬和BTS提供了跨传统对照,巴赫赋格和古琴《流水》则进一步检验:差异很大的材料,是否也可能让复听不断重排注意?

《平均律键盘曲集》的赋格以西方复调对位组织主题在不同声部中的进入与变形;具体作品可能使用倒影、紧接、增减值等不同技法,不能统称为同一套"严格数学变换"。

古琴曲《流水》依靠散板伸缩、吟猱绰注等左手润饰以及滚拂等右手技法组织音色与水势。它没有西方功能和声和赋格对位,却有自身的旋律、指法与传谱传统;"展"是本文对某些密度和音色变化的读法。

编码系统几乎没有任何共同点。

两者都可能让熟悉的听者在复听中发现新关系,但不能把"五百遍还有东西"当成事实测量。

巴赫赋格的多声部关系与《流水》的音色、指法和留白都可能产生一次聆听未处理的关系。它也可能只是注意改变,而不是一个固定储存在作品里的无限信息库。

本文把这种有限可比性称为"异构同效":结构不同,复听却都可能重开期待。它不是东西方作品在认知层面同一的证明。

八、反例:当凿构循环不完整

正面案例说完了,需要一个反面。

2024年Rosé与Bruno Mars的"APT."可以作为一个有争议的反例。它的chant hook识别度极高;本文关心的不是未经数据支持的"几个月后没人再听",而是为什么有些听者在熟悉hook后会迅速疲劳,另一些人仍从节奏、表演或共同参与中获得乐趣。

它缺了什么?

回到四步看,chant迅速建立并确认期待;bridge和段落回返是否足以重组它,则可以争论。若某位听者觉得后半段主要是在加强既有hook,本文会把它诊断为"展"较弱;但不能据此说认知模型完全固化、信息量归零。

这既是结构问题,也是品味与用途问题。歌曲可以把即时记忆、舞蹈参与和共同娱乐作为主要目标;复听深度不是评价流行音乐的唯一尺度。

hook的传染力是真实的写作能力,而bridge是否形成足够转折,必须靠具体听辨来论证。四步不是要求音乐家补交的配方,更不能预先判定作品缺了第三步。

它从韩国酒桌游戏得到hook灵感的创作故事说明即兴可以迅速生成材料;但即兴同样可能产生转折,反复修订也可能只强化模板。创作方法与"构"或"凿"之间没有一一对应。

BTS、周杰伦与Kendrick Lamar的若干作品可以作为对照:bridge、flow切换和编曲变化有时会重组段落关系。但这种判断应落到具体歌曲,也要允许听者对所谓"真实的展"意见不同。

周杰伦早期作品常把中国乐器、诗词意象、五声性旋律与R&B、hip-hop和流行和声并置。它的独特性不能缩成"五声音阶嵌进西方和声",更不能声称大脑同时运行两套已被验证的模型;较谨慎的说法是,多种语汇的并置让熟悉不同传统的听者听见不同层次的关系。

九、一个特殊案例:宗教音乐

某些宗教声音实践会把重复、持续音与缓慢变化推到前景,例如格里高利圣咏、佛教梵呗或藏传佛教诵唱。伊斯兰宣礼在许多信仰语境中并不被归类为"音乐",这些传统也不能合并成单一类型。

它们并非一律"旋律简单、节奏规律、没有展"。调式、诵词、呼吸、音色、领唱与回应、仪式动作和空间声学都可能建立复杂期待;传统内部的听者也会听见外来者忽略的差异。

因此,不能先把它们判成"信息熵归零",再用一个特殊机制救回来。长时间重复确实可能改变注意,让泛音、气息、身体节律或微小偏差进入前景,但也可能造成疲劳。

本文把这种注意重组暂称为从"定"到"展"的相变;这里的"相变"是审美比喻,不是已测得的生物学临界点。

重复何时改变经验,取决于材料、时长、声学空间、仪式参与、信念、训练和身体状态。结构与意图并非互斥:共同体赋予实践的目的也会塑造听者怎样分配注意。

它与皮娜·鲍什的重复可以作有限类比:熟悉动作或声音持续出现后,关系可能改变。但媒介、历史和参与方式不同,不能声称二者具有完全同构的认知机制。

因此,宗教实践与短视频hook不是"纯定"的两种固定结局。短片也可能在循环中生成身体和社群意义,仪式声音也可能对某位参与者失去作用。

时间尺度和注意环境是重要变量,却不是唯一解释。本文保留的假说是:重复既可稳定期待,也可把原来不显眼的差异推到前景。

这个假说需要实际聆听与研究检验,不能由框架自身宣布成立。

十、乐理的道理

回到开头的那句话。

乐理是术,道理是道。西方发展出了调性和声体系、对位法、奏鸣曲式。中国发展出了五声音阶、板式变化、散板结构。印度发展出了raga体系。非洲发展出了复合节奏。每一套都是精妙的编码系统,记录和组织声音的方式各不相同。

它们不必编码同一个东西,但都让我们追问期待怎样被习得、确认、改变与重新组织。

儿童很早就会对重复、节律和意外作出反应,但这不等于三岁儿童已经经历本文定义的完整四步,也不证明这种反应跨文化不变。

因此,"生定展固"是SAE提出的一组比较坐标,不是人类神经系统已经证实、且不分中外古今的基本操作。编码没有抽象的高低精粗;它是否有效,要在自己的传统、目的和听者关系中判断。

一首音乐是否经得起复听,可能与期待的建立、重组和余项有关,也与记忆、演奏版本、社会用途和个人经历有关。反复可听性本身也不是艺术价值的唯一标准。

这套框架可以用于比较贝多芬与K-pop、巴赫与古琴、Kendrick Lamar与圣咏,但每一次比较都必须保留文化差异,并允许作品或听者构成反例。

This series does not discuss music theory. It discusses the rationale behind music theory.

Western tonal theory tells you that a dominant seventh resolves to the tonic. This essay asks a broader question: how do different musical cultures establish, delay, or alter expectation? "Resolution" is a term within tonal practice and should not be projected directly as a grammar shared by every culture.

I do not discuss what a work "expresses." I discuss only one question: why can some music be entered repeatedly, with each entry yielding something new, while other music is effective only on first encounter?

I compress this difference into a four-step cycle: Arise (生), Settle (定), Unfold (展), Fix (固).

It is neither a music theory nor a style, but an aesthetic hypothesis borrowed from the Self-as-an-End Life Cycle Table: selection, construction, being chiseled open, and reclosure. It attempts to describe how music organizes expectation in time. Whether music moves a listener this way still depends on enculturation, expertise, memory, venue, and bodily state.

You do not need to understand music theory. You need only acknowledge one thing: you have experienced the sensation of an ending that weighs more than the beginning.

A preliminary note on scale: This cycle is scale-variable. It can operate at the level of a single musical phrase or across an entire work. It can nest (a large cycle containing multiple smaller cycles), run in parallel (multiple cycles operating simultaneously), or stagger (different channels at different stages). A work does not run through the cycle only once — it runs multiple cycles at multiple scales simultaneously, and the relationships between those cycles are themselves a source of remainder.

I. An Experience You Already Know

Set aside all theory for now.

Think of a piece of music you have listened to many times and would willingly listen to again. Any genre. Classical, pop, rap, folk, electronic — all qualify.

Now recall, roughly, your experience of hearing it for the first time:

Something at the opening caught you: perhaps a melody, a rhythm, or a quality of sound. You may not be able to name it, but attention gathered and perhaps an expectation of "what comes next" began to form.

Then that expectation was confirmed. Repetition, development, or the arrival of a chorus. You felt: "I understand what this piece is doing." A sense of comfort. You entered its world.

Then, at some moment, your expectation was broken.

Perhaps an unanticipated modulation. A sudden shift in rhythm. A vocal treatment you did not foresee. Perhaps very subtle — you cannot articulate precisely what changed. But you felt it: a "wrongness," a "surprise" — yet not random surprise. It followed a logic you could sense but could not have computed in advance.

Then it returned. The melody came back, or some sense of closure appeared. But your experience had changed. The same melody now carried different weight.

At the end, you possessed something you did not possess at the beginning. But you cannot say what it is.

This essay calls such an experience the chisel-construct cycle. It can be recognized in many kinds of listening and may appear early in children's musical experience. It is not, however, a universal fact exempt from testing, and it cannot replace the theories and listening habits of particular traditions.

II. Arise, Settle, Unfold, Fix

Decompose the above experience into four steps.

Arise (生). Establish expectation. Musical material appears, and a listener may form a predictive model from both the immediate context and long-acquired stylistic experience. This often requires no conscious analysis, but the object of expectation need not be "the next note"; it may be timbre, rhythm, density, or sectional direction.

The opening four notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony are Arise. The opening verse of a BTS song is Arise. The散板 introduction of the guqin piece "Flowing Water" is Arise. The first flow pattern Kendrick Lamar establishes in a track is Arise. The moment a DJ set's build-up begins is Arise.

Material and encoding differ, yet each case lets us ask where a listener forms an expectation of "what comes next." What is shared is the analytical question, not a proven identical neural operation.

Settle (定). Confirm expectation; allow it to become a stable model. Repetition, development, reinforcement. The listener moves from "I am predicting" to "I am certain."

A chorus repeated twice is Settle. A fugue subject appearing in different voices is Settle. A rapper running the same flow through an entire verse is Settle. A motif elaborated across a guqin passage is Settle.

This step establishes comfort. But comfort is not the goal — it is preparation for the next step. You must first have a stable model before that model can be broken. Without Settle there is no Unfold, just as you cannot chisel a stone that has not yet taken shape.

Unfold (展). Break expectation. Under the condition of non-randomness, cause the listener's predictive model to fail.

This is the most critical step.

Beethoven fragments the four-note motif and moves it through new tonal relations; a K-pop bridge may alter meter, key, or energy density; Kendrick may switch flow and reorganize rhythm within a verse. Across different fugues Bach uses inversion, stretto, augmentation, or diminution, not one uniform set of techniques. In the guqin piece "Flowing Water," continuous rolling-brushing strokes and changes of density shape the force of water, potentially reorganizing the listener's sense of time and timbre.

The essence of Unfold: you thought you knew what the next sound would be, and you were wrong. But it was not random — it followed a logic you could feel but could not have calculated.

At the moment of breaking, the cognitive system exposes something: remainder. The portion your model cannot absorb. "I thought I understood this piece — I did not" — that gap is remainder.

Fix (固). Re-close while carrying the traces of chiseling.

The recapitulation returns. The final chorus returns. The guqin returns to its overtone coda. But this return is not simple repetition. The listener has been changed by Unfold, so the same melody now carries different psychological weight.

Fix is not a return to Settle. Fix is a new stable state that contains one additional layer — the trace left by the chisel. You have closed, but the content of closure is thicker.

This is the source of "the ending weighs more than the beginning."

III. Why Some Music Crosses Cycles

With this model, "why does some music still have something after a hundred listens" receives a structural answer:

Repeated listening often makes expectations in familiar passages more precise and may redirect attention toward previously unnoticed voices, timbres, breaths, or production details. Remainder names relations one encounter has not absorbed. It may persist, or diminish with memory, context, and the listener's experience.

Bach's fugues in The Well-Tempered Clavier illustrate the possibility: polyphony lets a listener follow different lines on different occasions. New discoveries do not prove infinity, nor mean the ear received all information at once; they show that attention and memory change which relations come forward.

Conversely, some music may offer a particular listener fewer new relations after familiarity, but that does not make its "information content zero" or determine the exact listening on which every audience will exhaust it.

This is first a structural criticism, but it still contains judgments about taste, use, and context.

IV. Two Modes of Degradation

A song may establish a vivid pattern and continue repeating it. For some listeners, repetition mainly confirms an existing expectation and new relations quickly diminish; for others, rhythmic detail, bodily participation, or shared memory continues to matter.

Short-video platforms favor fragments recognizable within seconds, but that does not mean most short-form music lacks Unfold, or that brevity, repetition, and rapid popularity must produce rapid exhaustion. The framework can only ask, work by work, whether established relations are reorganized.

At the other hypothetical extreme, a work changes so continuously that some listeners struggle to form a stable reference. Experimental music is not inherently like this: timbral processes, performance rules, spatial distribution, or trained listening can all establish expectation, and chance itself may acquire perceptible boundaries.

Audience size is therefore not evidence that a cycle is complete or incomplete. Familiarity, institutions of circulation, and the time needed to enter a sound language all affect whether a listener perceives a construct.

"Confirmation without reorganization" and "change too rapid for a reference to form" can serve as two diagnostic directions. Whether enduring music lies between them is a hypothesis to be tested jointly against works and listeners.

V. Music Theory Is Only Encoding

To this point, we have not used a single music-theory term in the argument. This is deliberate.

Music theories are first languages through which particular communities describe and organize musical practice. This essay does not claim that every theory secretly encodes Arise-Settle-Unfold-Fix; it uses the four coordinates to compare how expectation forms and changes across traditions.

In Western tonal music, dominant-to-tonic motion can create closure, modulation can alter tonal expectation, and motivic repetition and development can stabilize or reopen relations. These are examples within one tradition, not a description of all Western music.

Chinese music cannot be compressed into "pentatonic scales and modal-rhythmic frameworks." Instrumental, operatic, and regional traditions have different pitch, melodic, rhythmic, and timbral logics. Free rhythm is structured through convention and performance, while "tight playing, slow singing" may exemplify layered temporalities without automatically constituting Unfold.

Raga is likewise more than different ascending and descending pitch sets: characteristic tones, phrases, ornaments, temporality, and performance lineage matter. Some ragas use asymmetric ascent and descent, but a familiar listener may expect that difference rather than experience it as a break.

Polyrhythmic relations in diverse West African drumming traditions can be compared with independent voices in a Bach fugue at the level of how multiple lines redirect attention. That does not prove the two are cognitively the same operation.

Encodings, histories, and embodied practices differ. Arise-Settle-Unfold-Fix is a comparative coordinate system here, not the single object those traditions truly encode.

Someone who deeply understands Bach may still feel lost on first encountering an unfamiliar West African drumming tradition; aesthetic sensitivity does not replace enculturation. Cross-traditional listening can grow through exposure, learning, and revision of one's own habits.

Taste and aesthetic judgment can be distinguished, but not simply as "subjective versus objective." Critics can ask whether relations are established, deviations are forceful, and closure carries a trace, yet they should state their evidence, listening position, and scope. Familiarity with classical music or exclusive attention to trap establishes no automatic hierarchy.

5a. Dialogue with Two Predecessors

The above insights are not entirely new. The philosophy of music has, over the past hundred and seventy years, touched different parts of this elephant in scattered fashion. A brief dialogue with two predecessors will locate the present essay's position.

Hanslick (1854), On the Musically Beautiful. He is the founder of musical formalism. Core thesis: the meaning of music lies not in what emotions it "expresses" but in "tonally moving forms" (tönend bewegte Formen) themselves. Musical beauty is structural, not referential.

This illuminates the present essay's attention to form; we too set aside readings such as "Beethoven expresses the struggle against fate." But Hanslick should not be reduced to "form is meaning," nor can this essay claim to supply the objective criterion he lacked. More precisely, it uses his account of musical autonomy to ask a different question: why do certain formal relations keep redirecting attention on repeated listening? Arise-Settle-Unfold-Fix is new vocabulary for that question.

Meyer (1956), Emotion and Meaning in Music. He did something very close to the present essay: he explained musical meaning through "expectation and the breaking of expectation." His core argument is that musical meaning arises at the moment when a listener's expectation is delayed or broken. This is nearly identical to Unfold.

Meyer's account reaches far beyond a single point of surprise: expectation, delay, inhibition, and stylistic learning belong to an interrelated psychological process. This essay differs in analytical scale. It links establishment, confirmation, reopening, and traced closure into a cycle, then uses remainder to ask how repetition redirects attention. That is a theoretical addition, not proof that Meyer cannot explain endings or repeated experience.

Taken together, Hanslick and Meyer provide two supports: formal relations cannot be replaced by emotional labels, and expectation arises from learned stylistic grammar. Arise-Settle-Unfold-Fix tries to coordinate those lines, but still requires testing against particular works, listeners, and research on repeated listening.

This is therefore not a story in which each predecessor grasped one leg and the present essay assembles the whole elephant. It is a limited theoretical dialogue: older concepts illuminate a new question, while the new framework acknowledges what it cannot absorb.

VI. Isomorphic Comparison: Beethoven and BTS

One is early nineteenth-century Viennese symphonic music; the other is twenty-first-century Korean pop. Their histories and production systems differ enormously. The comparison here is deliberately limited to the chisel-construct cycle.

Arise: The four-note motif (short-short-short-long) is rapidly established in the opening measures. For listeners familiar with this language, it readily becomes an anchor for memory and expectation: how will the motif develop?

Settle: The exposition spends approximately one hundred bars repeatedly confirming this motif. It appears at different pitches, in different instruments — always the same motif. Your predictive model grows increasingly stable.

Unfold: The development section begins. The four-note motif is fragmented. It appears in keys you did not expect; rhythm is stretched or compressed; instrumental groups tear against each other. Your predictive model fails completely — you recognize the four notes, but you do not know where they will go next. Remainder is massively exposed.

Fix: The recapitulation. The four-note motif returns to the home key. But what you hear is not the same motif as at the opening — having passed through the development's tearing, the same notes now carry different weight in your cognition. Closure, but the content of closure has changed.

Arise: The intro and first verse establish a melodic and emotional baseline through soft electronic textures and vocals. Your brain begins modeling.

Settle: The pre-chorus confirms the direction. You feel you know what the chorus will sound like.

Unfold: The bridge. Rhythm shifts. Arrangement shifts. Vocal treatment shifts. If this song's bridge merely changed key and repeated the chorus, it would be decorative Unfold, not real chiseling. But the best K-pop (BTS being among the finest in this respect) performs genuine structural breaking in the bridge — your predictive model fails, and you are uncertain how the song will end.

Fix: The final chorus returns. But you carry the bridge experience into your hearing, so the same melody weighs more than the first chorus did.

The four positions can be marked in each, while the encoding systems remain very different: orchestra versus electronic production and voices, sonata form versus verse-chorus form. "Isomorphism" is this essay's critical mapping, not a claim that the works have identical historical functions or listening mechanisms.

Why might both bear repeated listening? This essay proposes that the texture of Beethoven's development and the timbre, sectional form, and emotional turn of BTS's "Spring Day" can bring different details forward on repetition. Whether remainder persists, and for how long, must be tested by actual listeners rather than measured as fifty or thirty hearings.

VII. Heteromorphic Equivalence: Bach Fugue and Guqin "Flowing Water"

If Beethoven and BTS offer a cross-traditional comparison, Bach's fugues and the guqin piece "Flowing Water" test a further question: can very different materials both make repetition reorder attention?

The fugues of The Well-Tempered Clavier use Western contrapuntal polyphony to organize entries and transformations of a subject across voices. Individual works may use inversion, stretto, augmentation, or diminution; they should not all be described as one set of "rigorous mathematical transformations."

The guqin piece "Flowing Water" organizes timbre and the force of water through flexible rhythm, left-hand ornaments, and right-hand techniques such as rolling-brushing. It lacks Western functional harmony and fugal counterpoint but possesses its own melodic, technical, and notational traditions. Unfold is this essay's reading of certain changes in density and timbre.

The encoding systems share almost no common features.

Both may let familiar listeners discover new relations on repetition, but "something after five hundred hearings" is not an empirical measurement.

Polyphonic relations in Bach and the timbre, technique, and silence of "Flowing Water" may leave relations unattended in one encounter. That may reflect changing attention rather than an infinite store of information fixed inside the work.

This limited comparability is what the essay calls "heteromorphic equivalence": different structures may both reopen expectation. It is not proof that East Asian and European works are cognitively the same.

VIII. Counter-Example: When the Chisel-Construct Cycle Is Incomplete

The positive cases have been presented. Now a negative case is needed.

The 2024 collaboration "APT." by Rosé and Bruno Mars can serve as a disputed counterexample. Its chant hook is immediately recognizable. The question is not the unsupported claim that "almost no one listened after a few months," but why some listeners tire quickly once the hook is familiar while others still enjoy rhythm, performance, or collective participation.

What was missing?

In the four-step reading, the chant rapidly establishes and confirms expectation. Whether the bridge and returns sufficiently reorganize it is debatable. If a listener hears the second half chiefly as reinforcement of the hook, this essay would diagnose a relatively weak Unfold; it cannot conclude that the model is fully fixed or information has reached zero.

This is both a structural question and one of taste and use. A song may aim at immediate memory, dance participation, and shared entertainment; depth on repeated listening is not the only measure of popular music.

The hook's infectiousness is genuine craft, while the bridge's degree of transformation requires close listening and argument. The four steps are not a recipe that musicians must complete, and the framework cannot declare the third step absent in advance.

The story that its hook grew from a Korean drinking game shows that improvisation can generate material quickly. But improvisation can also produce a turn, while repeated revision may only reinforce a template. Creative method has no one-to-one relation with construct or chisel.

Particular works by BTS, Jay Chou, and Kendrick Lamar can provide contrasts: bridges, flow switches, and changes of arrangement sometimes reorganize sectional relations. The judgment belongs at the level of specific songs and must allow disagreement over what counts as "genuine" Unfold.

Jay Chou's early work often places Chinese instruments, poetic imagery, pentatonic melody, R&B, hip-hop, and pop harmony in relation. Its distinctiveness cannot be reduced to "pentatonic scales embedded in Western harmony," much less to a verified claim that the brain runs two models at once. More cautiously, listeners familiar with different traditions may hear different layers in the juxtaposition.

IX. A Special Case: Religious Music

Some religious sound practices foreground repetition, sustained tones, and slow change, including Gregorian chant, Buddhist chant, and Tibetan Buddhist recitation. In many Islamic contexts the call to prayer is not classified as "music," and these traditions should not be collapsed into one type.

They are not uniformly simple in melody, regular in rhythm, or devoid of Unfold. Mode, text, breath, timbre, call and response, ritual action, and acoustics may organize complex expectations, while insiders hear differences outsiders miss.

They should therefore not first be diagnosed as "zero information" and then rescued by a special mechanism. Extended repetition may redirect attention toward overtones, breath, bodily rhythm, or minute deviations; it may also produce fatigue.

This essay provisionally calls such reorganization a phase transition from Settle to Unfold. "Phase transition" is an aesthetic metaphor here, not a measured biological threshold.

Whether repetition changes experience depends on material, duration, acoustics, ritual participation, belief, training, and bodily state. Structure and intention are not mutually exclusive: a community's purpose for a practice also shapes attention.

A limited comparison with Pina Bausch is possible: as familiar movement or sound continues, relations may change. The media, histories, and modes of participation differ, so the two cannot be said to share a fully isomorphic cognitive mechanism.

Religious practice and a short-video hook are therefore not two fixed outcomes of "pure Settle." Looped fragments can acquire bodily and communal meanings, while ritual sound may cease to work for a particular participant.

Temporal scale and attentional setting are important variables, but not the only explanation. The retained hypothesis is that repetition can both stabilize expectation and bring previously unobtrusive differences forward.

That hypothesis requires actual listening and research; the framework cannot establish it by declaration.

X. The Rationale Behind Music Theory

Return to the opening sentence.

Music theory is technique; the rationale is the dao. The West developed tonal harmony, counterpoint, and sonata form. China developed pentatonic scales, modal-rhythmic frameworks, and散板 structure. India developed the raga system. West Africa developed polyrhythm. Each is a sophisticated encoding system; each records and organizes sound differently.

They need not encode the same thing, but all let us ask how expectation is learned, confirmed, altered, and reorganized.

Children respond early to repetition, rhythm, and surprise. That does not mean a three-year-old has already undergone this essay's complete four-step cycle, or prove that the response is invariant across cultures.

Arise-Settle-Unfold-Fix is therefore a set of comparative coordinates proposed by SAE, not an established basic operation of the human nervous system across all cultures and history. Encodings possess no abstract hierarchy of sophistication; their effectiveness must be judged within traditions, purposes, and relations with listeners.

Whether music bears repetition may depend on expectation, reorganization, and remainder, but also on memory, performance version, social use, and personal history. Repeatability is not the only measure of artistic value.

The framework can compare Beethoven and K-pop, Bach and guqin, Kendrick Lamar and chant, but every comparison must preserve cultural difference and allow works or listeners to provide counterexamples.

Essay II takes us into opera and Chinese opera — when the chisel-construct cycle is no longer confined to a single auditory channel but runs simultaneously across sound, body, and narrative, a new mechanism appears: cross-channel chisel.

A glance by Mei Lanfang and a breath choice by Maria Callas may illuminate one another at a limited structural level. The next essay tests the boundary of that comparison.
