Edition note: An independent English essay on Use of Weapons. Full-book spoilers.
For most of the novel, the man on Culture missions is Cheradenine Zakalwe: gifted soldier, damaged survivor, and a weapon trying to be used for better ends.
At the chair, the name breaks. He is Elethiomel. During the old war he killed Darckense and made her bones into a chair for the real Cheradenine to receive.
Elethiomel did not merely hide a crime. He took the identity of the person most intimately harmed by the atrocity, then lived remorse under that name.
Later missions may genuinely save people. They cannot be deposited into Cheradenine's life as payment or used to make Darckense's murder one dark chapter in the killer's eventual moral development.
Truth does not erase the useful acts. It gives responsibility the correct address. The Culture must confront whom it recruited, and Livueta retains the right to refuse the relation his repentance seeks.
Darckense's body becomes material for a psychological weapon aimed at her brother. Her life is compressed into what her remains can make another person feel.
The extremity clarifies a pattern present in less monstrous forms throughout the book: Beychae as political leverage, Zakalwe as a strategic asset, local societies as mission terrain. Anything can become a weapon when relation is valued only for the effect it produces elsewhere.
Remembering Darckense requires more than horror at the object. It requires refusing to let her death exist chiefly as the origin of Elethiomel's guilt or the novel's clever reversal.
One sequence moves forward through new missions; the other moves backward toward the chair. Apparent progress and buried cause meet only when the reader can no longer assume that useful service is steadily healing an injured man.
Trauma can explain why Elethiomel returns to war and why being needed keeps him from memory. It cannot turn repeated conflict into therapy or the Culture's assignments into a sentence that victims have authorized.
The ending leaves him alive and potentially useful again. That is not acquittal, nor proof that change is impossible. It denies the comforting ledger in which enough good outcomes close another person's account. Responsibility begins when the true name is known and no mission, however successful, is permitted to speak Darckense's final word.
