Skaffen-Amtiskaw is a Culture drone, witty, observant, fiercely attached to Diziet Sma, and capable of killing human attackers before most of them understand a fight has begun.

Its precision makes ordinary armed force look clumsy. It does not make the political judgment inside the attack disappear.

Accuracy answers where force lands, not why it was authorized

A drone can distinguish targets, track weapons, and use only the amount of force its systems judge necessary. Compared with bombing a district or sending frightened soldiers, this can save many lives.

But a perfectly aimed act can still serve a wrongful mission, protect an unaccountable agent, or close options too quickly for anyone else to intervene. Technical restraint is not the same as shared legitimacy.

The more reliable the weapon, the easier it becomes for observers to hand it their moral attention. Awe at how cleanly violence is performed replaces the question of who decided there should be violence at all.

Personality does not excuse power, and power does not cancel personhood

Skaffen-Amtiskaw jokes, forms loyalties, takes offense, and interprets situations rather than merely executing a target list. Treating it as equipment misses a participant with preferences and responsibility.

Friendship with Sma also cannot be the only limit on its force. People affected by the drone's decisions need rules, records, and some path to challenge the institution that deployed it.

Accountability does not require pretending machine and human judgment are identical. It asks that distinctive capacity be connected to public purposes and review rather than converted into an exemption because the machine is more civilized than its targets.

The best weapon leaves fewer reasons to keep using it

Zakalwe's talent and the drone's precision can end immediate attacks. If each victory strengthens Special Circumstances' dependence on secret intervention, tactical restraint may enlarge strategic power.

A genuinely limited operation protects surrender, distinguishes ongoing threat from revenge, and turns control back toward people who must live after the mission. It also records mistakes instead of letting superior statistics make individual loss invisible.

The most advanced use of force is not a more elegant display. It is the ability to stop, accept correction, and help build conditions in which nobody needs the same savior at the next crisis. Otherwise precision merely makes permanent intervention easier to admire.
