Estraven learns of his exile before breakfast is finished. By nightfall he must be beyond Karhide's border. The person who has tried hardest to keep his country from war is now officially the country’s enemy.

The charge of treason makes the world simple. It puts loyalty on one side of a line and betrayal on the other. Estraven's life keeps ruining that geometry.

A disputed valley becomes a test of belonging

Karhide and Orgoreyn argue over the Sinoth Valley as if a strip of land could settle which people are real and which claims deserve hearing. Estraven has crossed the border, negotiated, and imagined arrangements that do not require one state to swallow the other's account.

That makes him dangerous. A government can use a patriot who says the neighbor is wrong. It has less use for one who asks whether avoiding war matters more than winning the sentence. Estraven is not indifferent to Karhide. His refusal to treat national pride as the highest good comes from caring what war will do to the people living under the name.

Exile therefore does not uncover a lack of loyalty. It uncovers a loyalty the state cannot own.

Orgoreyn welcomes the envoy with open files

Orgoreyn initially appears more rational than Karhide. Its officials listen to Genly, request evidence, organize committees, and speak the administrative language he recognizes. Where a king's moods blocked him, forms and schedules seem to make progress possible.

Then the doors close. Genly is arrested, drugged, and sent to a “voluntary farm” where people disappear inside procedures. No single tyrant needs to shout. Each official performs a function, and the system turns a guest into a body that can be transported, questioned, and exhausted.

Estraven, also suspect in Orgoreyn, spends his remaining safety to get Genly out. He does not rescue the envoy because Genly has finally understood him; Genly has not. He acts for a future relationship among worlds that may never remember who made it possible.

The border gives the verdict

After crossing the ice, Estraven and Genly reach Karhide. Estraven could remain at the edge, but exile has already made every place provisional. When guards call out, he skis toward the line and is shot.

Genly wonders whether Estraven knew what he was doing. The novel does not turn the death into a tidy sacrifice with one official meaning. Exhaustion, despair, political purpose, and the wish to return home all meet in the same movement.

What the border does make visible is the poverty of the word traitor. Estraven has betrayed the expectation that a person must love one country by agreeing to hate another. He has not betrayed the people whose lives that expectation would spend. The guards can defend a line on the snow. They cannot contain the loyalty that carried an alien across it.
