Edition note: An independent English essay on The Left Hand of Darkness. Full-book spoilers.
At a public ceremony in Karhide, Genly Ai watches the king place mortar between two stones. The crowd understands ranks, gestures, and obligations that he cannot read. Beside him stands Estraven, the one politician who has actually helped his mission. Genly distrusts him.
The envoy has crossed light-years to ask an entire planet to join the Ekumen. He knows he must meet a different culture. What he does not know is how much of “different” he will immediately translate back into himself.
Gethenians are neither permanently male nor permanently female. For most of the month they are sexually inactive; in kemmer, a person may take either role, and the role need not remain the same in another cycle. The same person may be a father to one child and a mother to another.
Genly nevertheless narrates them as men. It is partly the limitation of his language and partly a reflex he does not notice. He admires conduct he can call masculine and grows uneasy when the same person seems feminine to him. Instead of letting Gethen trouble the categories, he uses the categories to explain away Gethen.
This does not make him malicious. It makes him recognizable. A traveller can sincerely value difference while continuing to carry an invisible measuring instrument. Everything unfamiliar is marked as deviation; the instrument itself passes as neutral.
Estraven speaks through indirection, aware that Karhidish politics turns on prestige, implication, and the dangerous dignity called shifgrethor. Genly wants declarations. When Estraven warns that the king cannot yet receive the mission, he hears evasion. When Estraven protects the mission without claiming credit, he suspects manipulation.
Estraven, meanwhile, overestimates how much the alien understands. He knows Genly is alone and unprotected, yet still speaks in the habits of his own court. Each man believes he has made the essential point. Between them lies not a lack of vocabulary but a disagreement about what counts as plain speech.
Diplomacy fails here before any treaty is rejected. It fails when one person decides that an answer not shaped like his question is no answer at all.
Genly brings facts about other worlds, a ship hidden in orbit, and the promise that more envoys will come. None of this can remove the strangeness of one dark-skinned man claiming to speak for a civilization beyond the sky. Karhide has reasons to be cautious. It also has institutions that convert caution into paralysis.
The irony is that Genly asks the Gethenians to imagine a fellowship larger than their world while failing to imagine the person already trying to help him. He can describe eighty-three planets as members of one human family; he cannot yet stop sorting the face across the table into “man,” “woman,” “loyal,” and “devious.”
Le Guin does not solve the encounter by making difference disappear. She begins with a more modest change: the envoy slowly learns that his own sight has a history. Before Genly can represent other worlds to Gethen, he must discover that he has never looked from nowhere.
