Edition note: An independent English essay on State Tectonics. Full-book spoilers.
More than two hundred employees leave Information. They take expertise into regions the central map once called null.
The institution sees a security breach and a loss of trained capacity. The leavers may see the first credible way to stop reproducing the center from inside it.
One resignation can be dismissed as personality. Hundreds leaving together reveal a pattern in workload, authority, strategy, or the institution's response to dissent.
Management does not have to accept every accusation. It does owe an independent inquiry, protection for those who stay and speak, and publication of what can be learned without exposing sensitive systems.
Trying to retain employees only through secrecy rules or moral guilt confirms that their labor is treated as property. A public mission deserves commitment; it cannot demand permanent possession of the people who serve it.
Employees know vulnerabilities and hold data entrusted by the public. Exit does not authorize selling records, abandoning people in immediate danger, or recreating the same monopoly elsewhere.
Transition can include secure handoff, protection of personal data, disclosure of conflicts, and limits on using privileged access. Those obligations should be specific and time-bound.
Former workers must also be free to build alternatives, criticize Information, and form new loyalties. Otherwise the institution owns their future merely because it once trained them.
Arriving experts may imagine themselves escaping hierarchy. Local communities may instead see another organized group bringing tools, assumptions, and influence.
New services need local governance, shared ownership, and the right of residents to reject a design. Decentralization that simply exports central staff does not yet distribute power.
Exit becomes constructive feedback when both sides can change: Information revises what drove people away, and the leavers allow the places receiving them to revise what they hoped to build.
