Harey drinks liquid oxygen and waits to die.

Her body will not permit it. The damage is catastrophic, the pain entirely real, and then the unfamiliar structure beneath her human appearance begins to restore itself. Kelvin watches a death reverse. What might look from outside like miraculous healing becomes, from inside Harey's decision, another form of captivity.

She has learned enough about her origin to refuse the life she was given. The body answers by returning her to it.

The body that saves her against her will

Ordinary moral language treats rescue as an obvious good. Someone is dying; another person prevents the death. On Solaris, the word becomes unstable. No doctor chooses to revive Harey, and no loved one persuades her to remain. A mechanism simply restores the organism because restoration is what the organism does.

The scene is difficult to bear because intention and survival have separated. Harey can understand her condition, judge it intolerable, and act. Her body belongs to a design that does not recognize the judgment. The more clearly she becomes a self, the more clearly she sees how little of her existence she controls.

This does not make death the answer she should have chosen. It reveals how narrow the station has allowed the question to become.

Every future belongs to someone else

Kelvin imagines taking Harey to Earth. His proposal contains courage and love, but Earth has no known place for her. She may depend on the ocean for continued existence. If she survives the journey, she will arrive as an unprecedented object of science, law, fear, and publicity. Kelvin can promise protection; he cannot promise a world in which she is more than his companion or humanity's discovery.

Sartorius offers another future: research. The visitors are physically powerful, appear without consent, and may multiply. The crew has legitimate reasons to defend itself. Yet defense, experiment, and disposal merge in the same apparatus. The device that explains Harey's structure is also the device capable of erasing it.

Remaining on the station means staying bound to Kelvin and to whatever the ocean continues to do. Returning to Earth may be impossible. Submitting to research places her fate in the hands of men who still disagree about whether she counts as a person. Every route has an owner before she enters it.

An exit should lead somewhere a person can continue living. Harey is offered persistence or nonexistence.

Do not turn disappearance into a love story

In the end, Harey asks Snow and Sartorius to use their annihilating device while Kelvin is asleep. She goes around him because she knows he will refuse. His protection has reached the point at which her decision must be hidden from the person who loves her most.

It is tempting to call her disappearance a sacrifice for Kelvin. She does care about his suffering, and she believes her presence binds him to a past he cannot repair. But to leave the interpretation there would assign her one last service. She would have been created for Kelvin, loved for Kelvin, and finally destroyed for Kelvin's recovery.

Her act also refuses him. He cannot decide that she must live because he needs another ending. He cannot make the new Harey carry his apology to the dead one. She claims the final judgment available to her, even though claiming it requires assistance from the men who possess the machine.

That judgment should be respected without being celebrated. A choice can belong to someone and still expose the poverty of the conditions in which it was made. Had Harey been given time, independent relationships, legal standing, and a place from which she could leave Kelvin without ceasing to exist, she might have chosen otherwise. Solaris never permits the experiment.

The station becomes quiet after the visitors vanish. From the institution's point of view, the crisis is over. Reports can be written; work can resume. Harey's future appears in that restored order only as a problem successfully removed.

The hand at the ocean's edge

Kelvin does not immediately return to Earth. He descends to a temporary formation on the surface and reaches a hand toward the ocean. A small movement of the substance rises around it, changes shape, almost approaches, then recedes.

Nothing is proved. The ocean does not explain the visitors or apologize for the pain they caused. Kelvin cannot know whether the movement expresses curiosity, reflex, recognition, or no category available to him. Even “almost” belongs to the human side of the encounter.

Earlier, the station sent radiation into the ocean and waited for measurable results. Here Kelvin has no experiment capable of forcing meaning from the response. He still observes; he cannot stop being human. What has changed is his willingness to leave the movement unfinished.

Harey and the ocean are two kinds of stranger. One arrived too close, wearing the face of memory. The other remains so distant that humanity cannot decide whether it has met anyone at all. The station failed the first by treating origin as destiny and failed the second by treating intelligibility as admission.

At the edge of the ocean, Kelvin does not finally understand Solaris. He holds out a hand. The substance rises beside it and returns to the sea.

This time, he does not send what he cannot understand away.
