Cheris and Jedao break the Fortress of Scattered Needles. On the strategic map, the campaign succeeds: the installation returns to the official calendar.

Then Kel reinforcements fire a carrion bomb. The Hexarchate is willing to destroy its own victorious fleet rather than risk Jedao escaping control.

An impossible siege makes ordinary bodies disappear into technique

The fortress is protected by invariant ice, while the attacking fleet uses exotic effects few crew members can understand. Officers discuss thresholds, formations, and calendrical weaknesses. The consequences arrive as bodies burned, ruptured, or left in positions they cannot abandon.

Jedao's psychological warfare can save some soldiers from direct assault. He can also accept deaths for a larger arrangement that only he can see. His reputation encourages subordinates to treat every opaque sacrifice as evidence of genius.

Cheris does not remain innocent merely because she notices the people behind the figures. She still commands attacks and calculates loss. Her difference matters only when sympathy changes the plan—by demanding alternatives, setting stopping points, and refusing to let victory speak for the dead.

The carrion bomb reveals whom loyalty protects

The fleet believes it is fighting to restore order. Once it has completed the dangerous work, the same order reclassifies it as contamination. Years of obedience cannot outweigh the possibility that its soldiers have seen what the center wants hidden.

Officials can invoke the millions Jedao might kill if he escapes. Yet the emergency was partly manufactured by storing him as a weapon and concealing the disposal plan. No one offered the ordinary crew warning, evacuation, or a way to separate themselves from the target.

The attack changes Cheris's politics more decisively than any abstract argument. A state prepared to kill loyal troops in order to preserve its command cannot be repaired by giving it better loyalty.

Refusing the empire does not make Jedao's whole plan sacred

Jedao's earlier Hellspin massacre was not simply a burst of madness. It belonged to a long struggle against the calendrical regime, which makes the official story less complete and the deaths no less real.

After the carrion bomb destroys his consciousness, Cheris swallows the fragments holding his memories. She chooses continuity in a moment with little safety or time, then allows the world to believe Jedao survives in her. The inheritance gives her knowledge; it does not give every future act advance approval.

Her next task is larger than replacing one official calendar with another. She must carry what Jedao understood without turning his victims into necessary footnotes, and use his terrifying name without disappearing inside it. The novel ends its victory there: not with a clean hero, but with a survivor who knows that the empire and its most brilliant enemy both tried to make people fit one complete design.
