The Fortress of Scattered Needles has changed its calendar, and the Hexarchate wants it back. Cheris proposes an answer no prudent officer should want near her: Shuos Jedao.
Jedao won every battle and once massacred both armies at Hellspin Fortress. Dead for centuries, his consciousness has been kept in a black cradle so that the state can deploy his talent again.
Jedao cannot choose death, silence, or the missions for which he is awakened. The Hexarchate calls him too dangerous to free and too useful to lose. Punishment has become a way of owning his time indefinitely.
Cheris suggested his use, but she does not receive the knowledge needed for meaningful consent. Her superiors know more about the installation, Jedao's history, and their plan for removing him. Military discipline also makes refusal costly before anyone gives an order.
Calling the result a partnership too early hides both pressures. Cheris is not an empty vessel, and Jedao is not a strategy file. Each can act; neither chose the room in which they must meet.
At first Jedao can speak inside Cheris's awareness but cannot directly move her body. He sees what she sees, while she cannot send him into another room. Ordinary privacy—distance, a closed door, even solitude—has been technically removed.
They begin to build smaller boundaries through practice. Jedao can offer reasons instead of issuing commands. Cheris can use his experience without treating him as an on-demand archive. Either can leave a question unanswered even when the other senses that an answer exists.
Trust cannot mean a single promise to believe everything. It grows around one maneuver, one disclosed risk, one decision that remains Cheris's. Their closeness is real precisely because it has to be negotiated inside conditions neither should romanticize.
Jedao is patient, funny, and attentive to ordinary soldiers. That contradicts the state's picture of a raving monster. It does not erase Hellspin.
He has also spent four hundred years thinking beyond the immediate siege. His affection for Cheris may be sincere while she remains part of a plan he has not fully shared. Private kindness and political use can inhabit the same person.
Cheris must therefore resist two ready-made stories: that Jedao's crimes make every word false, and that his gentleness proves the state lied about everything. The harder relation lets her learn from him, question him, and keep other voices near enough to answer. A shared mind becomes less like occupation only when neither consciousness is allowed to become the other's whole world.
