Four essays on language and decision, a killer without “I,” knowledge in wartime, and the danger that healing a saboteur may simply reverse the direction of control.
Samuel R. Delany's 1966 work Babel-17. Every essay in this series discusses the complete story and contains full spoilers.
Babel-17 expands perception while arranging action around an enemy’s purposes, but linguistic influence does not eliminate the body, history, relationships, and rival vocabularies through which reflection remains possible.
Without a stable way to claim an action, the Butcher cannot resist or answer for it in ordinary terms; teaching “I” restores agency while creating a new obligation not to replace one controller with another.
Rydra has reason to prevent attacks, but a limited protective task does not authorize the military to own her body, discoveries, silence, or every future use of a dangerous language.
Restoring “I” and “you” can return the capacity to choose, but treatment becomes counter-programming if success is measured by correct allegiance rather than the ability to refuse both sides.
