Edition note: An independent English essay on Ancillary Mercy. Full-book spoilers.
Sphene has been hiding for almost three thousand years in one ancillary body. It once filled a ship and belonged to a political world Anaander Mianaai destroyed before the present empire learned to call itself permanent.
To historians it is a lost archive. To the civil war it may be intelligence or a weapon. Sphene arrives in the present with reasons to distrust every hand reaching toward it.
For Breq, Justice of Toren's destruction is twenty years old and still immediate. Sphene has carried its loss across millennia. The empire sees antiquity; the survivor experiences continuity.
Rare knowledge creates a special temptation. If only one being remembers an event, institutions can say the public need to know outweighs its wish to remain silent. Urgency turns a question into extraction.
Sphene's account will also be angry, partial, and altered by isolation. That does not make it worthless. Living testimony is not a recording preserved outside time, and respect includes allowing a witness to revise what the past means.
Breq and Sphene both lost ships, auxiliary bodies, and people to Anaander. They can begin without explaining why a single body feels like a radical narrowing.
Similarity does not give Breq possession of Sphene's recovery. Twenty years among new relations led Breq toward protecting Athoek; three thousand years in hiding made revenge and suspicion reasonable survival habits for Sphene.
They can oppose one another's choices without revoking one another's reality. “I know why” may be followed by “I still cannot let you do this.” That is a deeper recognition than demanding agreement as proof of shared identity.
Athoek offers Sphene safety while an imperial fleet approaches. It would be easy to say that protection now obliges the old ship to hand over information, fight, or remain where Breq can watch it.
Common safety requires rules. Sphene may not attack residents under cover of asylum. But a rule against harm is different from a debt of loyalty, and any temporary restriction on departure needs a stated danger and a time for review.
The best future for Sphene may not be a replacement hull or a restored military function. It might be a home that does not measure participation by combat value. A relic waits where its curator places it. Sphene moves, refuses, remembers badly, and begins new relations. Those untidy acts are precisely how the oldest thing in the room proves it belongs to the present.
