One Person, One Work—and the Person as an End

Han Qin (秦汉)

How Specialization Becomes Justice

Plato's city begins from need. No one is self-sufficient, so people gather and divide labor. Different natures suit different tasks, and one person concentrating on one task produces better work at the proper time.

At first this is an economic rule. It explains how shoes and food are made well. Two books later, when Socrates searches the completed city for justice, the rule returns transformed: justice is doing one's own work and not meddling with another's. Movement across classes becomes the city's greatest harm and receives the name injustice.

The shift is easy to miss. A principle that entered as a way to organize production leaves as a way to organize persons. The loss caused by transgression is charged to the city. Whether a person's assigned place fits the life being lived does not appear in that account.

Two Meanings of “One's Own”

Plato's definition is powerful because it does not ground justice in obedience, divine reward, or majority preference. It says that something belongs to a person and justice consists in doing it.

SAE also places great weight on what is one's own. To treat a person as an end is to acknowledge that the person's law cannot be reduced to a variable adjusted by someone else. Others may request, employ, persuade, or direct, but they may not replace the subject's authorship of the reasons by which the life is lived.

The same phrase conceals opposite sources. In the Republic, one's own work is identified by the city through an assessment of nature and education. In SAE, one's own law can only be taken up by the person. Agreement is possible—an assigned role may become a genuinely owned vocation—but the authority of the assignment differs.

Modern employment makes the distinction familiar. The role listed by an organization and the work a person recognizes as theirs can coincide. When they do, specialization feels ordered and just. When they do not, competent performance can coexist with the knowledge that “this is not mine.”

The Finger and the Statue

Plato compares the best city to a body. When a finger is injured, the whole person suffers and cares for it. The image promises solidarity: no part is abandoned. It also absorbs identity. A finger has no purpose apart from the body; its good and the body's good leave no gap.

When Adeimantus objects that the guardians own no property and enjoy little private freedom, Socrates answers that the city was not founded to make one class especially happy. A sculptor does not paint the eyes purple merely because eyes are the most beautiful feature; the aim is the beauty of the whole statue.

The honesty is bracing. Plato sees the cost and records it in the open. SAE rejects the accounting rule, not the fact that a whole has needs. A person is not the eye of a statue. The citizen also lives the only life that citizen has, and the excellence of the city cannot by itself justify where that life must remain.

Plato is not indifferent to individuals. The entire dialogue argues that justice benefits the just person even without witnesses. The disagreement lies in who identifies the fitting position. Plato trusts the trained observer's craft; SAE leaves final authorship with the person, even when that authorship can err.

Someone Still Has to Stand Watch

Plato's reply is practical. Cities arise because needs must be met. Someone must cook, farm, care, and stand on the wall tonight. Stable practices require continuity. If every participant may withdraw at any moment, what kind of institution can promise that the wall will still be guarded tomorrow?

SAE can distinguish using another person's labor from reducing that person to labor. Consent, rotation, compensation, voice, and exit can make necessary work compatible with standing. Yet each protection complicates reliability, and some roles cannot be improvised daily. “No one may be locked into the function” and “the function will continue” are separate achievements.

Plato accepts and displays the price of stability. SAE refuses to pay with another person's authorship but must explain how durable cooperation survives that refusal. The question grows from the city's original need, not from hostility to freedom.

Return once more to the finger. The body cares because the finger is its finger; caring for the part is caring for itself. That truth can bind a community with extraordinary force. But the metaphor works by eliminating the second subject. A finger cannot ask why it must belong to this hand. A person can.
