SAE Foundations: How a Person Becomes an End

SAE Foundations: How a Person Becomes an End

These fifteen essays are not compressed summaries of six academic papers. They reorganize SAE around the questions a reader actually encounters: when systems begin to supply human purposes, how colonization enters identity and intimacy, why persons, relationships, and institutions must be read together, how freedom grows from options into a cannot-not, and why institutions arise when multiple ends share a finite world.

Essays 1–13 form a complete, self-sufficient foundation. Essays 14–15 are marked as optional theory deep dives into the ontological sources of subjecthood and Negativity. Nothing in the practical framework depends on reading them.

Suggested path: New readers can read Essays 1–13 in order, continue to The SAE First Critique, and then enter the dialogues and applied series. Return to Essays 14–15 only if you want the deeper ontology.
Han Qin (秦汉) · 2026 · Fifteen essays · Eight languages
Part I · Systems and Persons
Essay 01
When Systems Succeed, What Happens to the Person?

A well-run system needs no villain to reduce people to metrics, resources, and instruments of its own success. SAE begins with that problem.

Essay 02
Where Systems Must Act—and Where They Must Step Back

Institutions must secure the Base Layer and withdraw from the Emergence Layer. These are not competing values but two different institutional duties.

Essay 03
Freedom Is Not Having Options; It Is Being Able to Change Course

A menu of choices is not freedom. Fork Rights ask whether another path exists, can be reached and afforded, and remains imaginable.

Part II · Colonization Within
Essay 04
The Most Dangerous Colonization Says, “This Is What I Want”

Once metrics, competition, and optimization become identity, external commands are no longer necessary. Internal colonization governs in the first person.

Essay 05
How Love Becomes a License

The deeper the relationship, the easier it is to treat boundaries as distrust. Intimate colonization begins when genuine love becomes an exemption from recognition.

Essay 06
Being Seen Back into Existence

Subjecthood is not always restored through solitary reflection. Recognition from a deep relationship can reopen a self that performance has closed.

Part III · A Three-Layer Ecology
Essay 07
Why Persons, Relationships, and Institutions Must Be Read Together

Institutions supply boundary conditions, relationships transmit, and persons realize the result. The three layers share a form without becoming interchangeable.

Essay 08
Flourishing, Dormancy, Overdraw, Depletion

Feeling fulfilled does not guarantee structural health, and safety alone is not flourishing. Four states distinguish cultivation from dormancy, overdraw, and depletion.

Essay 09
Why One-Layer Reform Usually Fails

Six pathways connect the three layers. A single reform is often absorbed by the old loop; durable unlocking requires openings in at least two layers.

Part IV · From Freedom to Institution
Essay 10
Freedom as a Cannot-Not

Freedom is neither appetite nor refusal alone. It is the capacity to grow an inner necessity of one's own without letting a counterfeit must occupy the self.

Essay 11
When Two Ends Meet

Recognition is neither feeling for another nor accepting everything. Mutual chiseling, walking away, and arbitration govern encounters between irreducible ends.

Essay 12
Why Institutions Become Necessary

When mutual chiseling and exit cannot resolve an entangled remainder, a public, repeatable, accountable framework of arbitration becomes necessary.

Essay 13
How Thick Should an Institution Be?

Institutional thickness follows exit cost and relational density, not size. A legitimate institution also preserves independent channels for its own revision.

Theory Deep Dive · Optional
Essay 14
Subjecthood Is Not Consciousness

Consciousness, Negativity, and subjecthood are different questions. Science may detect a remainder; recognition remains an ethical act.

Essay 15
Where Negativity Comes From

If ontic randomness exists, how might it leave a macroscopic remainder? This is a conditional ontology with a firewall, not a premise of SAE ethics.
