Why Persons, Relationships, and Institutions Must Be Read Together

Han Qin (秦汉)

Three Partial Explanations

A young professional is anxious, overworked, and unable to change direction. A psychological account says he needs a more stable sense of worth. A relational account points to a family whose approval depends on achievement. An institutional account notes that housing, health insurance, and immigration status are attached to employment. Each explanation becomes inadequate when it tries to replace the other two.

Real subjects do not occupy separate psychological, relational, and institutional rooms. The sentence “I cannot stop” may be sustained at once by internal fear, conditional recognition from loved ones, and actual survival costs. Change one element and the other two may reinstall the old condition.

The complete SAE framework therefore places the individual, relational, and institutional layers within a single map. Each layer contains a tension between a Base Layer and an Emergence Layer. Yet the three layers perform different functions and cannot substitute for one another.

Institutions Set Boundary Conditions

Institutions determine which lives are structurally feasible. They organize minimum protections, exit costs, access to resources, and the reach of power. They cannot generate a person's purposes, but they can make some purposes nearly impossible to pursue.

Good law cannot command courage and public provision cannot manufacture meaning. But when refusing an employer removes the means of survival, courage carries an exceptional price. Institutions resemble soil and climate. They do not dictate the final shape of every plant, but they determine what can continue growing.

Because the institutional layer supplies boundary conditions rather than completed subjecthood, legal reform cannot announce that persons have been liberated. A right may exist in a statute while refusal is punished in a family and obedience has been internalized as personal desire.

Relationships Transmit

The relational layer stands between the others not merely in position but in function. Institutional evaluation enters a person through parents, teachers, managers, and partners. Individual fear travels through relationship and becomes a demand placed on the next generation. In the other direction, one act of recognition may make institutional space usable for the first time.

This is why relationships are both dangerous and precious. They can translate an impersonal metric into “I only want what is best for you,” giving system logic the voice of love. They can also translate an abstract right into the lived assurance that “I will still be here after you say no.”

Relationship is not noise between society and the individual. It is a transmission medium. Without it, we cannot explain why the same institutions produce very different forms of subjecthood in different families, teams, and communities.

The Individual Is the Layer of Realization

Institutions and relationships may cultivate a subject, but they cannot live in a subject's place. A concrete person must finally form purposes, judge, accept consequences, and revise. That is the irreducibility of the individual layer.

The three layers do not form a hierarchy from crude social reality to pure inner life. They are functionally asymmetric parts of one structure: institutions establish boundaries, relationships transmit recognition or colonization, and persons are where existence as an end is finally realized.

From Blame to Diagnosis

The three-layer view changes how responsibility is investigated. It does not abolish personal responsibility or blame society for every difficulty. It refuses to declare a single cause too soon. When someone cannot leave, we ask: Is exit institutionally affordable? Do important relationships permit change? Does the person still possess alternative ends and self-trust?

The answer is usually not one of the three, but a configuration in which they reinforce one another. The remedy will rarely be exhausted by “be brave,” a better conversation, or a new law.

Being an end is not a medal stored permanently inside an individual. It is an ecological achievement: institutions leave paths open, relationships continue to recognize difference, and persons remain able to generate and revise purposes from within. When all three layers carry their share, one person need not bear the weight of the whole world alone.
