Needing Others Is Not Being Incomplete
Another person is not under my control. That is both a danger and a possibility. Neither gives a particular relationship a permanent claim on my life.
Once the difficulties of relationships are taken seriously, an understandable question follows: why bother? Expectations become pressure. Help acquires strings. A decision that once required discussion turns into something another person routinely makes for me. Wouldn’t a life without this exposure be safer?
“Humans are social animals” is not much of an answer. Too easily it becomes an instruction to go back, or a diagnosis of what is wrong with someone living alone. The question is more exacting: if a person can have a life of their own, what can another person add without being the one who makes that life count?
The source paper imagines an extreme case: the first and only person in the universe. No companion, audience, praise, or disapproval. This person can still care about things, make decisions, reconsider, and take responsibility for a life. Their worth does not wait for a second person to arrive.
Suppose someone eventually does arrive. The important change is not that a mirror now confirms the first person’s value. There is a new source of questions that the first person does not control. Someone else can have reasons of their own and refuse to accept an answer that had seemed sufficient.
The danger and the possibility have the same source
This is where the danger begins. The other person is not a character I wrote. They may press their judgment into the place where I need to form my own. They may call reconsideration betrayal, or present their expectations as the person I ought to have been all along. An encounter does not guarantee room for either life.
But remove that independence completely—allow only questions I approve, phrased in ways I welcome—and something important disappears with it. A channel in which I select the reasons, interpret them, and decide which count remains under my control, however open I call it.
Self-reflection matters. I can look back and see what I once missed. Yet revisiting myself does not fully replace a question from someone else. Not because the other person must be right, but because that source is not mine to direct. My explanation may not have finished the matter for them.
This is also where a particular kind of help becomes possible: someone offers conditions for my development without requiring the result to be their preferred version of me. They can have hopes and give reasons. They need not make conformity to those hopes the test of whether their help succeeded.
Possible is the important word. Meeting another person is not automatically meeting goodwill. Waiting patiently for someone does not perform their growing for them. The step of making something one’s own remains with the person receiving the help.
Nor are such encounters confined to intimate life outside institutions. Colleagues, teachers, patients, and staff remain people. A colleague listening beyond what a procedure requires, or a teacher refusing to reduce someone to a grade, can make room within an institutional setting. Intimacy is not the only available place for this.
Disagreement may also loosen something. I discover that a principle I defended was a habit I had never examined. The other person hears, perhaps for the first time, what an arrangement they considered obvious does in my life. A new understanding can become possible.
It is not a promised return on suffering. Conflict also brings exhaustion, injury, and newly exposed incompatibilities. The possibility of learning does not make conflict a mark of a good relationship, still less a reason to manufacture it. A benefit later discovered cannot reimburse every cost incurred.
An unanswered life is not an incomplete person
Return to the solitary person. If they begin to care about a possible other whose life is also their own, turning toward that person need not mean looking for an audience. It can mean leaving something for someone whose answer cannot be supplied in advance.
The condition matters. This is not a claim that everyone must experience the same longing, or that everyone secretly needs a romantic partner. When another person’s life as their own actually matters in this way, turning toward another is part of what that concern entails—not an optional social task attached from outside. It does not follow that a further act of searching will occur.
They might write a book. They might take no action yet. Imagining a reader is not already meeting one; writing does not deposit a compulsory direction inside the reader’s future. The writer can leave conditions. What another person makes of them remains that person’s part.
Years later, someone reads the book and finds a sentence that changes how they see a problem. A one-way relation has occurred. The writer may never know and cannot reply. Missing a reply is different from having no relation at all. Equally, the reader must not turn their own interpretation into imagined approval from the writer.
Some people never find anyone who can respond to what matters most to them. They may miss an encounter or an independent avenue of questioning. Such losses need not be dismissed. But they are not missing a portion of their standing as a person. They can care about something even when nobody answers.
Need and incompleteness are different. Needing care or understanding does not mean that failure to receive it makes someone less of a person. Conversely, being able to stand alone does not establish that the outside world has become unnecessary. Self-sufficiency in worth is not a sealed existence.
Nor does need create a general duty to enter relationships. Nobody must marry, maintain a circle of friends, or seek intimacy to make their life count as acceptable. Whether a particular encounter should begin or continue belongs to its circumstances. An abstract claim that people need relationships cannot decide it.
Being answerable is not being permanently available
Keeping one’s judgments open to questions can itself be misused. If it means responding to everything at any time, the person most willing to intrude wins the greatest access. Unlimited availability, demanded in the name of openness, becomes a route for harm.
Refusing immunity from every external question is compatible with never taking one particular person’s call again. Contact can end permanently. There need not be a door waiting for that person to return. An independent challenge need not arrive through the original person’s direct access to me.
A question may return through another person, other material, or an appropriate process of checking. What matters is not constructing a channel that admits only what I have already declared favorable and then treating its resulting quiet as proof that I was never mistaken. Timing, boundaries, and protection from manipulation still require judgment. Answerability is not the abolition of rest.
This distinction also makes another sentence possible: I need relationships, but not this one. I do not have to endure a particular person’s harmful conduct indefinitely in order to recognize that their life is their own. Leaving need not declare that no future encounter is worth having.
Something can be lost in departure. A possibility requiring these two people’s continued participation will no longer develop in the same way. That loss can be real without becoming a claim that forces someone to stay. The mere survival of a possibility does not entitle it to a whole person’s life.
What has already been left is different. A skill, a question taken seriously, or an acquired habit may continue. So may the aftereffects of harm; ending contact need not remove them immediately. These are things to address as they actually persist, not proof that restoring contact is the only answer.
An outsider cannot certify someone who avoids intimacy as wholly closed. That person may read an earlier writer, encounter a stranger beyond a practical transaction, or still look toward a meeting that cannot be booked in advance. Neither relationship status nor a count of friends settles that question.
A relationship is not a machine for completing an insufficient person. Its possibility lies precisely in the fact that the other end is not me and need not follow my script. Its danger lies there too. Neither side comes with a guarantee that the other can be removed.
Turning toward someone need not require denying the danger. Protecting oneself need not require declaring every relationship useless. A particular door can close; another route can remain possible. Before someone answers, a person is still a person. If an answer comes, meeting it need not mean handing oneself over.
