A Sentence from Someone You Never Knew
The writer never knew you existed. A sentence still changed your afternoon. What begins between people—and what cannot be claimed in its name?
You have owned the book for years. The cover curls at the corners. One page still has the fold you made when you first read it. The writer never knew you existed. Perhaps you never wrote a review or sent a letter. Perhaps the writer died before you were born. Yet a sentence stayed. Years later, something happened, and there it was again. On another occasion you found yourself disagreeing with it and reached for the book.
Is that a relationship? In ordinary speech, the word usually suggests that both people know about it. We expect some exchange, however slight. A reader and an unsuspecting writer seem too unequal to qualify. But if we delete everything that receives no answer, we delete much that has genuinely happened between people.
This series begins further back. A relation has begun when a person's action, or something that action leaves behind, actually enters another person's circumstances: what they can notice, imagine, or do next. The effect must be identifiable as passing between those particular people. It need last only an afternoon. Friendship, recognition, reciprocity, and promises are not entrance requirements.
Identifiable does not mean that somebody presently has the evidence. The writer's ignorance does not undo the effect. Neither should an observer turn uncertainty into a verdict that nothing happened. Still, this is not a claim that every causal connection in the universe is a human relation. Where we cannot establish the particular connection, we can leave it unsettled.
Reading Plato can belong here. The words are a medium through which a person's work reaches you. The paper is not the other person. And feeling understood by an earlier writer does not mean that writer promised you anything. An imagined reply must not be entered as an actual answer. A relation can be one-way without giving its living end permission to invent the other end's voice.
Nor must the other person already be able to explain a complete position. A baby is involved in relations before being able to offer reasons. The ability to articulate a life and the standing of someone whose life it is must not be confused. This series uses relation in this person-to-person sense; it is not settling every question about our connections with objects or animals.
What “we” cannot decide for us
Once a relationship matters, it can start to sound like an additional person. Our relationship cannot allow that. You cannot think only of yourself when there is a family to consider. A third judge seems to have entered the room, entitled to say what both people must do and no longer open to either person's questions.
But a relationship has no separate life to live. What it leaves is quite real: routines, agreements, habits, expectations, ways of speaking. These can carry considerable weight. They do not thereby acquire a mouth that can make the final decision for both participants.
This does not make every agreement disposable. Two people may each stand behind a shared arrangement. They may recognize a procedure for settling matters between them. The force of that arrangement runs through those actual commitments or procedures. It does not come from a superior will called the relationship. Changing it still means facing what has already been done.
The word we can also slip between two meanings. We are doing something together. We recognize one another as people with lives of our own. Both may be true, but neither settles the other. We love each other, therefore you must agree to move: here recognition is being borrowed to close an argument about a joint decision. Love has not signed the consent form for either person.
The distant writer makes this easier to see. A book can give you an opening without becoming the source of your worth. The understanding that grows through reading is yours. The same distinction matters in intimacy. A relationship can offer the circumstances in which someone becomes more fully themselves; it does not manufacture their value or grant them permission to have a life.
There are two different questions here. Must someone first qualify before we regard them as an end in their own right? No. Do we actually make room for them in this encounter? That can succeed or fail. A child's limited abilities do not reduce their standing. Respecting the child does not require the parent to cease being a person either.
An opening, and a ruler slipped inside
Return to the book. One page opens your eyes; another makes you angry. Both are encounters with something that changes what comes next. The paper calls these collisions, using the word without its usual suggestion of hostility. Recognition, inspiration, misunderstanding, and disagreement can all belong.
Not every disagreement is a conflict in the narrower sense developed elsewhere in SAE. Nor is every encounter a mutual process of revising judgment. A writer who never hears from you has not entered that process with you, however much the book changes you. Conversely, a parent and an adult child may genuinely question and revise their judgments together on a particular matter, despite their different positions.
Identity does not certify the process or automatically rule it out. Friends may not be listening. A teacher may be. What matters is whether the other person's question actually enters this exchange, rather than what name we give the relationship.
Some influences make room for a person's judgment. Others try to occupy its place. The first moves toward cultivation; the second toward colonization. These describe directions in a particular action, not permanent kinds of people or relationships.
Both directions can occur in the same lesson. A teacher explains a way of looking at paintings so well that the student begins to see details unaided. In the same hour, the teacher presents a favorite school as the only possible art. One part opens the student's eyes. Another attempts to install a ruler. We cannot subtract one from the other and calculate a net score for the lesson.
Many interactions do neither. Asking directions or handing over change need not be a grand act of personal growth or control. Add ‘If you will not take me there, you are not a decent person,’ and the request changes. Now I am also trying to decide what your refusal means about you.
Direction is not the same as completion. Room offered may not yet be usable. An attempted takeover may be noticed and refused. We can examine the words, the arrangement, and the response to disagreement to consider the direction of an action. What it becomes in the recipient's life requires attention to their subsequent understanding and conduct. The giver cannot announce that part complete.
I only wanted the best for you does not settle this. Neither does the recipient's later success prove that everything done earlier was sound. And if a book provides an idea which somebody else later uses to shut down a reader's questions, that later action cannot simply be charged to the book. Each part must be read for what it actually did.
An expectation is not an answer
Expectations grow almost before we notice them. You read three books and wait for a fourth. A friend comes several weekends running, and you leave next Saturday free. Somebody understands half a sentence, and you start assuming they always will. The expectation is real at your end. It shapes your time and may make a late arrival especially painful.
It cannot, however, supply the other person's promise. Hoping they will stay does not establish that they agreed to stay. Feeling that I understand them does not establish that they accept my account. An expectation can be expressed and discussed. They might take it up themselves, or it might enter an explicit shared arrangement. Its existence alone proves neither.
We also need to distinguish attempts to occupy judgment from violations of basic rights. Persuasion can lean toward control without having crossed every rights boundary. Conversely, shutting off a person's actual routes to refusal, withdrawal, or exit is not made harmless because they experience the arrangement as loving. A rights boundary is not determined by how pleased the recipient later feels.
This is not a way to make serious harm sound mild. Where basic conditions or workable exits are substantially compressed, protection cannot be replaced by the hope that two people will understand each other. We can continue to ask what the episode leaves in their lives without pretending that relational understanding is the whole response required.
Institutional roles complicate the picture too. Teachers and students, managers and employees have specified responsibilities as well as exchanges beyond them. We need to know the arrangement before deciding what someone has personally added. Giving an accurate evaluation in one's role differs from using that evaluation to purchase agreement. This series reads the interpersonal effects; it does not settle the legitimacy of the institution.
More people do not justify a vaguer account. Parents arguing in front of a child each leave effects in the child's circumstances. A person who sends pressure through a messenger does not lose their part in it; the messenger has a part as well. A small group has no collective personality into which its members can disappear.
A low threshold for relation does not make every passing encounter intimate. It prevents us from erasing an influence simply because it lacked a name. Refusing to turn the relationship into a superior authority does not belittle closeness. It prevents closeness from living somebody's life for them. A sentence can come from someone you never knew and remain for years. It still cannot answer in your place: what do you think now?
