The Mark Across Forty Years

Toru returns from the well with a blue-black mark on his cheek. Nutmeg notices because her father once carried the same mark.

He was a veterinarian at the zoo in Hsinking, Manchuria, in August 1945. As the Japanese empire collapsed, soldiers received orders to kill the tigers, leopards, bears, and wolves before damaged cages could release them into the city. The reason is defensible. The soldiers are not trained executioners and need repeated shots. The veterinarian knows every animal and watches without intervening or assisting.

No one in the chain wants this task. Soldiers follow an order; the order answers military collapse; the veterinarian has no power to reverse either. The animals still die. The mark appears on the face of the person who witnesses the entire procedure and can neither prevent nor refuse it.

Responsibility does not vanish when it is divided among orders, circumstances, and professional roles. It becomes harder to locate while the consequence remains whole in the body that bears it.

Four decades later the same shape appears on a man who has sat at the bottom of a Tokyo well. The novel never turns the mark into a diagnosis. It creates continuity without simple causation: violence leaves forms that reappear after the official reason for them has disappeared.

Work Made From What Cannot Be Explained

Nutmeg’s son Cinnamon stopped speaking after a childhood event. He now manages schedules, accounts, transport, meals, and communication with extraordinary precision. He also writes on a computer about his grandfather in Manchuria. A person without a voice becomes the keeper of the previous generation’s unrecorded history.

Nutmeg was a successful fashion designer before her husband’s unexplained murder. She now treats wealthy women through an unnamed laying-on of hands. Something blocked in them loosens. Toru, whose mark grows warm, eventually receives the same clients. He sits with them; they cry; the inexplicable becomes his livelihood.

An unemployed man acquires work through a sign no credentialing body could issue.

The novel’s timelines accumulate: Yamamoto skinned under orders in 1938; zoo animals shot under orders in 1945; Noboru entering other people while receiving public authority in 1984; Cinnamon losing speech; Nutmeg and Toru helping bodies release what ordinary medicine cannot locate.

The actions do not explain one another, but they rhyme. Something is removed; the remover has a reason; the removed part has no institutional address. Across generations, people at the edge build unofficial practices of memory and care around what remains.

The title calls the book a chronicle. A chronicle does not necessarily prove a theory. It preserves sequence. The invisible bird keeps winding; regimes and professions change; the mark retains its shape. By placing these episodes on one line, Murakami prevents each period from declaring its own procedures self-contained.
