Reading the Iliad

Four essays on the price list that cannot contain a life, Hector’s dependence on other people’s eyes, the court engraved on Achilles’ shield, and Priam’s bounded truce with grief.

The Iliad does not offer a modern moral in ancient costume. It sets incompatible human claims beside one another: honor and survival, vengeance and settlement, glory and the ordinary life visible only on a shield. These readings stay with those collisions.

Homer’s Iliad, an ancient Greek epic whose twenty-four books cover roughly fifty days in the tenth year of the Trojan War. Full-poem spoilers.
