Reading Xiao Hong's Tales of Hulan River

Four essays on a town that can torture a child in the name of saving her, stage its grandest ceremonies for the dead, punish those who refuse its measurements, and still contain one garden where nothing must explain why it is what it is.

Xiao Hong does not present Hulan as a courtroom with one criminal in the dock. She records a town in which custom, sympathy, entertainment, and practical interest can converge on the destruction of a child—while nearly everyone involved believes that ordinary life is simply continuing.

The four essays move from the child bride whom an entire courtyard tries to “save,” through the mud pit and rituals that organize the town's explanations, to two men measured by public opinion and a garden where life is briefly allowed to exist without justification.

Edition note: The English essays are independent rewritings of the Chinese arguments, written for readers who may be encountering Xiao Hong for the first time.
