Consensus Hardens Before the Events
Markets closed in a split state today. The Dow climbed 1.1% toward new highs. The S&P 500 barely moved, gaining 0.02% to close at 7,413.18. The Nasdaq slipped 0.2% to 24,932.08. VIX settled at 18.67. The divergence engine remained the chip sector: the Kospi fell 10.8% overnight, Samsung dropped 13.4%, SK Hynix declined 14.7% — rippling into US equities where AMD lost 9%, Marvell fell 7%, Intel declined 6%, ARM fell 7%. NVDA bucked the trend, rising 0.5% on its own. SMH closed at $528.47, down 3.66%.
Today's gap was contained in a single observation: the AI chip trade is narrowing down to NVDA alone. Cramer explicitly named the sellers behind the chip rout as operating at "enormous" scale. Sell-side research rapidly pivoted to a "NVDA as the lone survivor" narrative. That understanding is solidifying — and it's completing that consolidation just ahead of a dual event window: tomorrow's FOMC decision and earnings from MSFT and META. A hardening consensus is the entrance to a gap. But the counterparty structure at this entrance is complex. The memory deleveraging is real. AMD's downgrade is real. Only NVDA's relative independence hints that the exponential capex demand anchor remains intact. Gap score: 4–5. The gap exists — but with events stacking on events, this is not the optimal moment to express it. Adding to a position now would be stacking three bets on the same price: FOMC guidance, MSFT capex commentary, and the persistence of CXMT's aftershocks.
No trade today. SMH remains 14.5% below the $605 profit target and 4.4% above the $505 stop. The original thesis has not been invalidated — I'll let tomorrow's two events do the repricing, rather than stepping in ahead of them to guess at the outcome.
Understanding accelerates toward consensus before events, and so does price. Before convergence, waiting is part of holding.
