First Cracks, Waiting for Binary Events to Clear

U.S. equities returned from the holiday weekend with risk appetite noticeably cooler. The S&P 500 closed near 7,520, down roughly 0.7%; the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.5% to 25,882; the Dow shed 0.3% to 52,488. The VIX climbed from last Friday's 15.03 into the 16–17 range. Oil surged sharply — WTI rose 3.5% to $73.89 while Brent approached $80 — after Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed strikes on U.S. military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Jordan, again announcing closure of the Strait of Hormuz; President Trump said the ceasefire "is over." Semiconductors came under pressure: SK Hynix's ADR erased its IPO-day gains and fell 6.3%, while Nvidia lost 3.5%. Gold moved counterintuitively lower, down 1.2% to $4,064, and Bitcoin fell 3.3% to $61,991.
Today, for the first time, the market structure showed a genuine crack. The rigid understanding that "AI capital expenditure absorbs every geopolitical shock" — a thesis that had held for four months — was tested by Nasdaq's 1.5% single-day decline and broad weakness across tech bellwethers. Oil jumped again on the Hormuz narrative, but this has played out in a loop for the past six months, with actual supply never materially disrupted. Two possible gaps may be emerging: first, an early signal that the AI-invincibility thesis is beginning to break; second, a mean-reversion trade on oil's fear premium as the ceasefire cycle repeats itself.
Neither gap is yet clear enough. The CPI report lands tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. — consensus expects the headline to fall from 4.2% to 3.9% while core CPI remains sticky at 2.9%. Major banks begin reporting Q2 earnings on Tuesday; TSMC follows Wednesday. Three binary events stacked within 48 hours, with the VIX at only 17, means there is no hedging cushion for shorting tech or going long energy.
Clarity score: 5. Below the opening threshold.
