Broadcom fell 14% intraday after its AI guidance declined to raise the full-year $100 billion target; CrowdStrike dropped 11%. The S&P added 0.4%, the Nasdaq barely moved at +0.1%. VIX sat at 16.06. WTI crude dipped 0.9% to $95.17; spot gold hovered near $4,440, essentially flat.
A Type-1 gap candidate emerged: the Dow hitting record highs with VIX at 16 while the Shiller PE stands at 42.53—second only to the 1999 dot-com peak; the AI capex narrative showing its first structural crack as Broadcom refused to raise its annual target; and the Iran conflict still simmering. The collective understanding reads “healthy rotation, market is sound.”
But clarity remains low. Today’s tech selloff was orderly rotation, not panic—money didn’t leave the market, it changed lanes. Gold and oil have already partially priced in the risk premium. VIX at 16 is “normal-low,” not “extremely compressed.” In other words, the chasm isn’t wide enough to justify crossing friction costs for a bet.
