Why He Could Not Say Why

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument for English-language readers. Plot claims have been checked and interpretive claims are marked as such.

A boy and a girl sit behind a fairground and connect stars into the shape of a rabbit. The moon becomes its belly. They promise to meet in the same place the following year; if they lose one another, they will meet on the moon instead.

The scene is brief enough to seem weightless. Johnny gives River a stuffed platypus, hears his mother call, and leaves. To the Moon makes the player cross an entire lifetime backward before reaching this ordinary night. Only then do we understand that the most persistent desire in Johnny’s life began here.

The accident next door to the promise

Soon afterward Johnny’s twin brother, Joey, is killed when their mother reverses a car. The game gives the family no villain on whom grief can be placed. There is an accident, a dead child, a surviving child who cannot live with what he remembers, and a mother who must continue caring for him while carrying her own responsibility.

Within the game’s fictional medical premise, she gives Johnny beta blockers that seal away the unbearable memories. The intervention works. Johnny can sleep, grow, attend school, and continue living.

But memory does not divide itself according to moral importance. The treatment also closes access to the nearby fairground evening: River, the rabbit in the sky, the promise, and the platypus.

The detail exposes a problem larger than the fictional drug. What we most need to preserve is not always located where we would think to look. A half hour that appeared trivial when it occurred can later prove to be the hinge of a life. No one making the emergency decision could have known what else had grown in the same patch of time.

A decision made for a child

It would be easy to turn Johnny’s mother into the first culprit in a chain of violations. The game resists that comfort. She has just killed one son by accident and is watching the other collapse. She has access to something that may stop his suffering. Most people cannot honestly promise that they would refuse it.

Her reason does not erase the structure of the act. She decides which part of a child’s past he will be able to carry into adulthood, and he will never be given a later opportunity to review the choice. Compassion and substitution occupy the same action.

Decades later, Eva and Neil will make a related decision with better equipment and formal consent. In each case someone intervenes “for Johnny’s good.” In each case the good is real. So is the fact that another person determines what version of Johnny will remain available to himself.

The wish survives its story

The treatment removes Johnny’s access to the promise but does not remove the direction that the promise gave him. He continues to want the moon without knowing why.

This is the game’s most precise account of how a missing past can act in the present. Johnny is not secretly consulting a complete memory. He carries a force whose explanation has been cut away. Asked for reasons, he can offer only repetition: he has wanted this for as long as he can remember.

Because the reason is unavailable, the desire also becomes faintly embarrassing. “I want to go to the moon” sounds like a childish fantasy when detached from the person and promise that made it intelligible. Johnny learns to treat his own longing as something he cannot defend, even though he cannot stop having it.

Meeting River again

Johnny encounters River later at school. He does not recognize her. She recognizes him.

They date, marry, build a house beside the lighthouse she names Anya, and spend decades together. To Johnny, theirs is a relationship that began in adolescence. To River, it is also the return of someone for whom she had already waited.

They share a marriage while living inside different histories of how it began. Johnny’s lost memory has not only deprived him of an episode. It has made the same life mean something different to the two people living it.

Based on Freebird Games’ 2011 To the Moon. The memory effects attributed to beta blockers belong to the game’s fictional premise, not to a claim about ordinary clinical use. Full spoilers throughout.
