Those Who Live in Death

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument for English-language readers. Plot claims have been checked and interpretive claims are marked as such.

Strike a skeleton in an Elden Ring graveyard and its bones collapse. Turn away too quickly and blue-white light gathers around the remains. The bones reassemble. The skeleton stands again.

Players soon learn the extra movement: knock it down, then strike the reforming remains before they rise. What looks like a minor enemy gimmick teaches the deepest disorder of the Lands Between. Death no longer completes itself.

Death has been administered

It is tempting to summarize the Golden Order by saying that nobody can die. That is too simple. People are killed throughout the Lands Between; corpses and tombs are everywhere. What Queen Marika removed and sealed was Destined Death, with the fated deaths of the demigods especially taken from the Elden Ring. Proper death was oriented toward return to the Erdtree, and Erdtree burial was granted as an honor.

The result is not the absence of death so much as an order that claims authority over how death occurs and where the dead belong.

The Night of Black Knives breaks that administration. Godwyn the Golden dies only in soul. His living corpse is buried at the Erdtree’s roots, where the fragment of Death spreads through the subterranean network as Deathroot and gives rise to Those Who Live in Death.

The skeleton rises because an unauthorized form of death has entered the roots—one the Golden Order neither sanctions nor successfully receives.

The thing that cannot be removed must be carried

The Golden Order begins when Destined Death is confined. Marika charges her shadowbound beast, Maliketh, with guarding the Rune of Death. After a fragment is stolen, he seals the remaining power inside his own body.

Death has not been destroyed. It has been made into one being’s permanent burden.

Maliketh is guard, lock, and container. His extraordinary strength belongs to him, but its lifelong use has been assigned in advance. The Order concentrates what it cannot absorb in a single body, removes that body from ordinary life, and behaves as though the contradiction has disappeared.

A lock proves that what lies behind it still exists. When the Tarnished defeats Maliketh, Destined Death is unleashed rather than invented. The excluded power no longer has to be suppressed by him alone.

Every order creates an outside

Erdtree burial sounds gentle: the dead return to common roots and receive a place within a shared sacred order.

Those Who Live in Death do not make that return. They refuse or fail to answer the Erdtree’s call, suspended between categories. Golden Order fundamentalists hunt them not because each skeleton has committed a moral offense, but because its continued existence demonstrates that the classification is incomplete.

An order is often more disturbed by what it cannot classify than by someone who openly argues against it.

Fia’s later project is not to normalize the undead by forcing them back into the old path. Her Mending Rune would place “life within Death” inside Order, granting a lawful condition to lives previously treated only as errors awaiting elimination.

A landscape without conclusions

Almost every region of the Lands Between looks caught after an ending that never arrived. The Shattering has no victor. Demigods clutch Great Runes inside territories that decay around them. Radahn still wanders the battlefield; Malenia sleeps in the Haligtree. Fortresses are half-ruined, festivals continue, and institutions repeat gestures whose purposes have been forgotten.

Destined Death cannot explain all of this. War, ambition, Scarlet Rot, and the broken Elden Ring have distinct effects. Together, however, these conditions produce a single lived impression: the old order cannot conclude its affairs, and no new order has arrived to receive what remains.

The player repeatedly performs the skeleton’s “second strike” on behalf of the world—kill, collect, mend, complete—hoping one more action will make something final. Every conclusion opens another absence.

Guidance on the ground

Grace appears as gold lines pointing toward significant destinations. It does not force a route. Players can ignore it, wander underground, and find entire regions the rays never make legible as the “next step.”

The light nevertheless remains. It externalizes an answer to the question of where one ought to go.

The Tarnished are those from whom Grace was once withdrawn. When Godfrey’s wars ended, he and his warriors lost the gold in their eyes and were exiled. After the Elden Ring broke, Grace called them and their descendants back.

Their worthiness is not restored because they have repented or changed. The Order needs candidates again.

This gives the Tarnished an unusual position. They have been excluded by the system and recruited to repair it. They can follow Grace, but they also possess a history that should prevent them from mistaking its light for the only possible direction.

The radiant tree is a locked door

The Erdtree illuminates the Lands Between. Burial, belief, and sovereignty all converge upon it. Yet when the Tarnished reaches its entrance, thorns refuse access.

The Two Fingers’ prescribed journey fails at the threshold. Even Enia, their interpreter, is surprised. To enter, the player must use the taboo Flame of Ruin and later release Destined Death. The Order commands a champion to repair it, bars the champion from doing so, and thereby makes transgression a requirement of obedience.

The Lands Between do not suffer merely because a ring is broken. They suffer because an order cannot contain its own exceptions, endings, or repair.

The next essay turns to Marika—the god of the Golden Order, the vessel of the Ring, and the person who shattered it.

Based on FromSoftware's 2022 Elden Ring, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. It does not cover Shadow of the Erdtree. Because the game's narrative is distributed across dialogue and item descriptions, confirmed detail is distinguished from interpretation. Full spoilers.
