The Back of the Head

Edition note: An independent English rewriting for viewers of Edward Yang’s 2000 film Yi Yi. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.

Eight-year-old Yang-Yang follows adults with a camera and photographs the backs of their heads. Asked why, he answers that they cannot see that part themselves, so he will show it to them. The line sounds playful until the film reveals it as a theory of knowledge.

I. Knowing only half

Yang-Yang first wonders whether seeing only what is in front of him means he knows only half the truth. The question arises from being misread. A school disciplinarian repeatedly decides what he has done before hearing him. Other children torment him while adults process only visible outcomes.

He begins to experiment because nobody is asking what he is trying to understand.

II. A camera as assistance

The photographs are limited. A back of a head does not reveal a soul or explain behavior. Their ethical direction still matters: another person can help me encounter what my own standpoint necessarily excludes.

Knowledge becomes reciprocal rather than proprietary. I do not become complete by looking harder from the same position.

III. The family’s invisible halves

NJ yields to business decisions he distrusts and tells almost nobody. Min-Min discovers that her days can be summarized in minutes. Ting-Ting carries guilt over her grandmother’s stroke. The grandmother lies unconscious, inaccessible even while becoming the family’s only patient listener.

They share a home without sharing the hidden portion through which each day acquires meaning.

IV. Not simply innocence

Yang-Yang says he wants to show people what they do not know and let them see what they cannot. The ambition is comic and serious. It does not place the child above the adults; he too will eventually have a back he cannot see.

The film’s long duration performs the same service. It gives one life’s ordinary side enough time to appear beside another.

V. Partiality as relation

The answer to seeing only half is not a fantasy of total surveillance. It is another perspective freely offered and corrigible. A person remains more than any photograph.

Yang-Yang’s gift is not completion. It is evidence that our blindness need not isolate us if another person is willing to look, and if we are willing to receive an image we could not have made alone.
