Edition note: An independent English rewriting for viewers of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s 2018 film Shoplifters. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.
Osamu and Shota shoplift with the choreography of a game, then eat croquettes on the way home. Kore-eda lets the scene feel warm before asking us to name it accurately. It is theft, performed by an adult with a child.
The cramped house belongs to Hatsue, whose survivor’s pension is its most stable income. Osamu works construction by the day until injury removes him without security. Nobuyo loses her laundry job. Aki works in a sexualized performance venue. Shota steals instead of attending school.
Every stream is precarious, compromised, or both. The household’s intimacy rests on an economy that can collapse with one injury or inspection.
Hatsue periodically receives money from the family descended from the husband who left her, while their daughter Aki lives in Hatsue’s home without knowing about the payments. Shelter and extraction coexist. Learning one does not make the other imaginary.
The film refuses the comfort of assigning each act a single moral color.
Osamu and Shota find five-year-old Yuri outside in winter and initially intend to feed her once. Nobuyo sees burns and bruises, including a scar resembling her own. When Osamu hears Yuri’s parents fighting and abusing her, he carries the child back.
Keeping her without reporting is kidnapping under the categories the authorities will use. Leaving her would mean returning her to documented harm. The conflict is not dissolved by calling the household loving.
When Hatsue dies, the family buries her beneath the house. Reporting the death would stop the pension and trigger inheritance consequences that none of the unofficial residents can survive. They later find her hidden cash.
Grief, fraud, fear, and opportunism occupy the same sequence. The ugliness is necessary because a sentimental portrait of noble poverty would lie about who pays for the family’s continuation.
The household has offered food, touch, and recognition. It has also converted children into accomplices and a dead woman into continued income. Neither record cancels the other.
Shoplifters asks us to balance the accounts before speaking of love—not because care is unreal, but because real care does not grant immunity from the material means by which a family preserves itself.
