Reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Three essays on a position that turns judgment into procedure, a dishonest and compromised man whose ordinary pleasures become deviance, and the silent patient who preserves enough of himself to leave.

These readings do not reduce the film to a contest between a good rebel and an evil nurse. McMurphy is manipulative, violent, and serving time after sex with a minor; Nurse Ratched often speaks through recognizable therapeutic and administrative responsibilities. The sharper question concerns what their positions allow.

The ward makes order legible and recovery ambiguous. Speech becomes record, voluntary patients surrender difficult choices, and an official can harm somebody by following a rule without asking whether the person before her can bear its application.

Miloš Forman’s 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Full-film spoilers throughout.
