Edition note: An independent English rewriting for viewers of Miloš Forman’s 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.
Waiting for electroconvulsive treatment, McMurphy offers Chief Bromden half a stick of gum. Chief says, “Thank you.” His deafness and muteness have been strategic. Silence kept him from supplying the institution with material it could interpret.
Chief describes a father diminished by colonial and bureaucratic power until alcohol completed the work. To avoid the same reduction, he becomes institutionally empty: he sweeps, does not respond, and generates no story in meetings.
The protection is severe. A person cannot easily be misquoted if he never speaks, but neither can he be encountered. McMurphy’s irreverent assumption that Chief is present begins to return him to relation.
After spending the night with Candy, Billy is brought before the ward. When Ratched asks whether he is ashamed, he answers no without stuttering. For a moment he speaks outside the fear by which his mother has governed him.
Ratched then says she will tell his mother. The scene does not establish this as a mechanical professional duty. It shows her recognizing the exact dependency that will restore control. Billy’s stutter returns immediately. Soon afterward he dies by suicide.
The crucial question is not only whether mentioning family violates a written rule. It is why this sentence, now, in public, to this person. Professional language can make a precisely chosen act of coercion sound like neutral concern.
Rules do not remove judgment. They can conceal its author after the consequences arrive.
McMurphy attacks Ratched and is taken away. She later returns wearing a neck brace; the music, medication line, and meetings resume. His violence reached her body, not the position that concentrates discipline, records, and therapeutic authority.
McMurphy comes back lobotomized. Chief suffocates him. The film frames the act as mercy, but interpretation should not erase its difficulty: Chief makes a final, irreversible decision for somebody who cannot answer. We never receive McMurphy’s judgment of the life that remains.
Chief then lifts the hydrotherapy console McMurphy once failed to move and throws it through the window. This act differs because Chief chooses the destination of his own body. His strength was present all along; relation helped make it usable.
Chief escapes because another person addressed him as capable of response before receiving one. Behind him the ward remains. The ending preserves one person’s agency while refusing a clean institutional victory—and leaves us to ask how far liberation can go when it still includes deciding another person’s fate.
