Edition note: An independent English rewriting for readers of Once Upon a Time in America. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.

A Suitcase, Four Boys, and One Key

Once Upon a Time in America begins in 1933 with Noodles hiding in an opium den. He believes he has informed on three friends and seen their burned bodies. The film will eventually reveal that only two died and Max staged his own death, but guilt begins from what Noodles thinks his telephone call has done.

Time moves among 1922, 1933, and 1968 through objects and sounds: an eye at the same opening decades apart, a door, a telephone, a railway locker. We receive consequence before cause, then inhabit memory's attempt to make a sequence.

The common fund

As Jewish boys on New York's Lower East Side, Noodles, Max, Patsy, Cockeye, and the younger Dominic build a gang beneath the local power of Bugsy. Max thinks beyond today's theft. After a successful scheme recovering bootleg liquor from the river, the boys place earnings in a suitcase and lock it at the station. Fat Moe, who is outside the gang's operations, keeps the key.

The arrangement limits each member through the others. No one may convert a shared future into private cash at will. It is not their only autonomous act, but it is an early rule they make together rather than inherit from the street.

The pact cannot make their enterprise just. They steal, extort, and later kill. Self-government among insiders can coexist with violence toward everyone outside the circle. The suitcase protects equality within the gang, not the people it harms.

The hole in the wall

Moe's sister Deborah rehearses dance in a storeroom while Noodles watches through a hole from the lavatory. The position becomes the form of his desire: he can see the life she wants and cannot enter it without trying to possess it.

Deborah intends to leave the neighborhood. When she briefly invites him into the room, she reads from the Song of Songs, kisses him, and tells him that he will remain a street hood. Max calls; the door closes.

Years later Noodles will treat that closed door as something taken from him. The film keeps returning to the more difficult truth: seeing and wanting another person do not grant entry.

Dominic and the first rupture

Bugsy shoots Dominic. The boy says he slipped and dies in Noodles's arms. Noodles kills Bugsy and stabs a police officer, entering prison while the others continue without him.

The act is grief, loyalty, and self-destruction at once. Noodles answers a friend's death by sacrificing years of his own life and giving the state power to remove him from every shared decision that follows.

When he returns, Max has built the gang into a Prohibition enterprise. Noodles is welcomed back as though no time has passed, but the organization has acquired a direction he did not help choose.

The suitcase remains the image of their promise. Its lock says no one acts alone. The film's tragedy will be written by men who repeatedly act alone while claiming to protect the group: Max designs a future for everyone; Noodles calls the police to prevent it; each converts friendship into an object his own judgment may manage.
