Reading Life of Pi

Three essays on a self-chosen name, a boundary maintained with a tiger, and two stories that separate narrative responsibility from factual proof.

Ang Lee's film asks how a person survives what cannot be made coherent. These essays follow Pi from naming himself, through an asymmetrical life with Richard Parker, to the moment when a report must choose a form for an experience it cannot verify.

Based on Ang Lee's 2012 film Life of Pi, adapted from Yann Martel's novel. Plot details and quoted ideas follow the film rather than treating either of Pi's accounts as finally verified.
