Three essays on a man repeatedly judged by categories, a soldier who outlives an inherited destiny, and the woman whose inner life the film both recognizes and withholds.

Forrest Gump turns three decades of American history into the memories of a man who rarely understands the official meaning of the events around him. Institutions repeatedly classify Forrest, then discover that they can use the very abilities their classifications failed to see. His literalness can suspend status and prejudice, but the film also protects him from consequences that fall heavily on other characters.

These essays read the film through that tension. Forrest's refusal to reduce people to labels is morally significant without making him a universal innocent. Lieutenant Dan's story is not simply a cure for despair but a struggle over who may author a life after an inherited ending collapses. Jenny's story contains real images of abuse, anger, and flight, yet remains largely narrated from outside. The film's warmth and its limits become clearest when held together.
