Three essays on a time-travel box that cannot restore the desired life, a choice made under impossible constraints, and an anonymous repair performed on a city wall.

Jeffrey Lau’s A Chinese Odyssey turns the mythology of Journey to the West into a comedy of misrecognized identity and a tragedy of belated knowledge. Joker is not a Monkey King who has consciously hidden for five continuous centuries. He is the rebel’s reincarnation five hundred years later, without the memory by which that old life could already count as his own.

The readings follow what happens when an inherited destiny becomes personally intelligible. The Moonlight Box rewinds time but cannot return Joker to the ordinary life he wants. The Golden Hoop is placed on his head by his own hand, though under radically narrowed alternatives. At the city wall, the restored Monkey King gives two strangers the ending he could not give himself—and does so through an intervention whose tenderness does not erase its trespass.
