The Box Could Rewind Time, Not Restore His Life

Edition note: An independent English rewriting for readers who may not know Journey to the West, checked against Jeffrey Lau’s released 1995 two-part film. Plot details in the Chinese draft have been corrected where necessary.

At the beginning of A Chinese Odyssey, Joker is the unreliable chief of a desert bandit gang. The audience is told that he is the reincarnation of the Monkey King, the rebellious supernatural hero of Journey to the West. Joker himself does not remember that life.

This distinction is decisive. He has not spent five conscious centuries running away from an identity he knows to be his. Five hundred years have passed; another life has begun. The conflict starts when gods, demons, marks on his body, and people from the past insist that the life he calls his own is only an interval before an older script resumes.

I. An identity without memory

For an audience raised on Journey to the West, “Monkey King” arrives already full of meaning: power, rebellion, punishment, and the duty to protect the monk Tang Sanzang on a pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures. For Joker, it arrives as somebody else’s biography.

Others recognize signs he cannot interpret. Zixia, the immortal woman he meets after traveling into the past, burns three moles into the sole of his foot. The gesture is comic possession—she has declared that everything around her belongs to her—but the three marks also complete the sign by which his return as Monkey King becomes legible.

A mark can identify a body without supplying a memory. That is the film’s first problem of selfhood. Everyone may be correct about Joker’s origin while still being wrong to assume that origin has already become his acknowledged identity.

II. A destiny negotiated before he could answer

The two-part story frames Monkey’s reincarnation and eventual pilgrimage as the consequence of an earlier rebellion and Tang Monk’s plea for him. Long before Joker can consent, his future has been organized as pardon, repayment, and vocation.

The language of a contract helps, provided we do not take it literally. There is an obligation with identifiable terms, but the present subject did not negotiate it and initially does not even know it exists. A life is waiting for his signature before he knows how to read the document.

That is why his resistance is not mere cowardice. The role of Monkey King offers immense ability and a place in sacred history. It also requires a journey defined elsewhere and the abandonment of the small attachments by which Joker presently knows himself.

III. What the Moonlight Box promises

The Moonlight Box is a time-travel device activated beneath the moon. Joker first uses it repeatedly to return to the moments surrounding Pak Jing-jing’s death. He adjusts his timing and tries again. The box reopens the scene, but it does not produce the restored life he imagines.

On the final attempt, the device sends him not minutes but five hundred years into the past. The failure is not that the box “never changes anything.” It changes his location, sequence, and future. Later, it is used again to save the surviving pilgrims from the city’s destruction. What it cannot do is return events to the ordinary arrangement Joker wants.

The difference is important. A tool may work perfectly as transportation and fail completely as restoration. Time can be reopened without becoming obedient.

IV. A refusal made for particular people

Joker does not seek the box in order to become rich, rule an empire, or acquire universal knowledge. He uses it because one particular woman has died. His aim is not “humanity” or “history.” It is Pak Jing-jing.

After he is displaced into the past, another particular person enters the story. Zixia seizes the box, names him as hers, and treats the legendary hero inside him as an accomplished fact. Joker first performs love as a strategy. The performance becomes entangled with a feeling he understands only belatedly.

In both relationships, his resistance to destiny is attached to concrete people. The sacred journey asks for an abstract role; the box records his demand that an individual life not be exchanged so easily for the larger design.

V. He does refuse the name

Once in the past, Joker repeatedly says he is not the Monkey King. The insistence can be comic because the audience knows what he does not. But comedy should not erase the epistemic situation. His denial begins when the claim is imposed on him; it is not proof that he has secretly known it for centuries.

Nor is denial wholly irrational. To accept “Monkey King” is not simply to acknowledge ancestry. It is to take up a duty, a set of powers, a discipline, and a prohibition on ordinary desire. He is being asked to turn descriptive identity into normative commitment.

The film’s real movement is therefore not from ignorance to factual recognition alone. It is from an identity spoken by others to a role he eventually performs through an act that can be attributed, however imperfectly, to him.

VI. The box as an instrument of non-acceptance

The original intuition remains powerful: the Moonlight Box is a machine for saying no to the completed past. Each activation says that what happened should not be final.

But the box does not teach that refusal is useless. Without it, Joker would not reach Zixia, learn the structure of the fate imposed on him, or later carry his companions out of destruction. Refusal creates knowledge and movement even when it cannot retrieve the lost life.

Its limit is more exact. The box can reopen circumstances; it cannot guarantee another person’s survival, preserve love in the desired form, or exempt the traveler from the consequences of what he comes to know.

VII. The life it cannot give back

Joker wants a bandit fort, quarrels, meals, friends, and a love that belongs to an ordinary day. None of those things is grand enough for scripture. That is precisely why they matter. They are the materials of a life lived from inside rather than a destiny admired from outside.

The film does not simply prove that the grand role is superior. It makes the cost of resuming that role visible. Becoming Monkey King will allow Joker to act where an ordinary man is powerless, but it will not reveal that his former attachments were trivial.

The Moonlight Box fails as a return ticket to the life he wanted. Its deeper function is to carry him far enough that he can no longer pretend the choice is not before him.

This reading follows the released 1995 two-part film. The first part’s official Hong Kong title is 《西遊記第壹佰零壹回之月光寶盒》; the second is 《西遊記大結局之仙履奇緣》.
