Economics
This series re-reads the history of economic thought and economic institutions through the chisel-construct cycle — from moneyless gift economies to Satoshi Nakamoto and the scored society.
The framework's core claim: every order is a construct built in response to a chisel — the fracture of an earlier order. Constructs have what they can do and what they cannot. What they cannot do generates remainders. Remainders do not disappear; they shift, accumulate, and eventually force the next chisel.
The economy, as a construct, has wanted from its very first day to press people and things into a single settleable scale: from the weight of prestige in a Kula ring, to a temple's ledger, to a coin's purity, to the two columns of double-entry bookkeeping, to the last unit of marginal utility, to the synthetic structure of a derivative. And every time it tries to close its books, its own unabsorbable remainder pries it back open — the person who won't be converted into a number, the gift that won't wash clean, the correlation no model can quite estimate, the ordinary family that never enters the scale of systemic risk. These twenty-three essays follow that construct across several thousand years, closing its ledger again and again, and pried open again and again.
The full series is available in Chinese, English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, and Korean; every edition is independently written for its readers.

Reciprocity and the Gift — Never Settling Was the Point礼物经济不是通往货币的前传,而是一套靠不结清运转的关系秩序——库拉圈、夸富宴与债务的谱系里,藏着凿构周期律最早的余项。A gift economy is not a prelude to money — it is a relational order that runs on never settling. The Kula ring, the potlatch, and the genealogy of debt hide the chisel-construct cycle's earliest remainder.
-
Clay Tablets and Clean Slates — Writing Was Born to Serve a Debt最早的文字不是为了写诗,是为了记账。 The earliest writing wasn't for poetry — it was for the books. Mesopotamian temple ledgers pressed people into a table of debt, and the periodic clean-slate decree was the construct's first way of loosening its own remainder.
-
The Scale Gets a Body — Coinage Didn't Invent Value, It Gave the Remainder a Shape价值早就存在,稀缺的从来是让它可以随身携带。 Value already existed; what was scarce was making it portable. The first electrum coins struck in Lydia gave an abstract scale a body of metal — and let it fall, for the first time, into anyone's hand.
-
The Just Price and the Usury Ban — The One Thing the Scale Would Not Weigh中世纪经院学者一边为公平价格辩护,一边严禁靠时间本身生利。 Medieval scholastics defended the just price while banning profit made from time itself. What they were guarding was not efficiency but something older: not everything is for sale.
-
Debit and Credit — Not Asking Was How It Balanced复式记账第一次让账本自己证明自己是对的。 Double-entry bookkeeping was the first ledger that could prove itself correct. The few things Pacioli taught merchants not to ask about became the construct's cheapest way of closing itself.
-
Paper and Promise — When the Metal Left, Someone Still Had to Answer for It交子是世界上最早的政府纸币,它让货币第一次和金属脱钩。 Jiaozi was the world's first government-issued paper money, the first time currency was cut loose from metal. But a piece of paper is only believed because of a credit standing behind it that the paper itself never dares to name.
-
The Ledger and the Mountain — First Counted, Then Priced重商主义把整个世界读成一本可以清点的账:金银是分数,贸易顺差是加法。 Mercantilism read the whole world as a ledger to be tallied — bullion as the score, a trade surplus as addition. The more completely it counted, the more completely the lands and people being counted turned into remainder.
-
A Price for Every Inch — Success Was the Confession这一篇暂停了这个系列一贯的克制。 This essay suspends the series' usual restraint. An insurance valuation, a hold's stowage diagram, a line in a ledger — the more precisely a person was pressed into a price, the more precisely the price confessed the crime.
-
To Be Praised, and to Be Praiseworthy — The Remainder Never Left the Shelf看不见的手常被读成一句只讲自利的口号。 The invisible hand is usually read as a slogan for pure self-interest. Smith's other book already kept a judge inside the self that self-interest could never fully recruit — and that judge is this essay's real remainder.
-
Consciousness and the Ledger — Value Went In, a Number Came Out杰文斯、门格尔与瓦拉斯几乎同时把价值搬进了个人的意识里,又几乎立刻要求那个意识交出一个所有人都读得懂的数字。 Jevons, Menger, and Walras all but simultaneously moved value inside individual consciousness — then almost immediately demanded that consciousness hand back a number everyone could read. Going in was easy. Coming back out never came clean again.
-
The Accountant of the Remainder — Even His Ledger Does Not Balance马克思是第一个把余项本身当成研究对象的人:商品拜物教,剩余价值,工厂法背后没写明的那道量表。 Marx was the first to make the remainder itself the object of study — commodity fetishism, surplus value, the unwritten scale behind the Factory Acts. But the transformation problem he left behind proves even the remainder's own accountant cannot balance the books.
-
Love and Unwaged Work — Never Entering Was the Point家务,照护,养育——GDP从不把它们算作生产。 Housework, care, raising children — GDP has never counted them as production. That is not a statistical oversight. The construct has always leaned on exactly this: labor that must exist, and must never enter the books.
-
The Commons and Its Enclosure — What Had No Name Was Left Behind圈地运动把公地变成了私产,账本也第一次能替土地算出一个明确的主人。 Enclosure turned common land into private property, and for the first time a ledger could name a single owner for a field. But the customary rights that never needed a deed had nowhere left to stand once the fences went up.
-
The Scale and the Remainder — Exact to the Decimal, Blind Where It Mattered金本位把汇率钉到小数点后好几位,精确得像一门自然科学。 The gold standard pinned exchange rates to several decimal places, precise as a natural science. But the automatic adjustment this scale was proudest of ran, in practice, on somebody else's unemployment.
-
Effective Demand and the Column Marked Voluntary — Clearing Was Never Automatic古典经济学相信市场会自动出清,失业只可能是自愿的。 Classical economics believed markets clear themselves, and unemployment could only be voluntary. The Depression proved, with tens of millions of idle hands, that the self-clearing mechanism was never actually there.
-
The Grain and the Roll — Someone Decided Who Counted孟加拉,爱尔兰,大跃进——三场被讲成天灾的饥荒,粮食其实从未真正从世界上消失。 Bengal, Ireland, the Great Leap — three famines usually told as natural disaster, in none of which did the grain actually vanish from the world. What decided who starved was a roll that decided who counted and who didn't.
-
The Chain and the Cover — Credit Was There All Along布雷顿森林体系把美元钉在黄金上,又把世界货币钉在美元上。 Bretton Woods pinned the dollar to gold, and the world's currencies to the dollar. The 1971 order that closed the gold window tore away less a lingering gold standard than a cover page that had stopped matching its contents long before.
-
Contracts and Correlations — The Ledger Begins to Record Itself标准化的合约,可计算的价格,被拆成好几段的链条——金融化把整个世界的风险都变成了可以打包转让的证券。 Standardized contracts, calculable prices, a chain broken into links — financialization turned the world's risk into securities that could be packaged and passed along. For the first time, the ledger began recording other ledgers.
-
Systemic Risk and the Remainder — Only the Connected Were Caught2008年,那把用来决定先救谁的尺子叫系统性风险。 In 2008, the scale used to decide who got rescued first was called systemic risk. It calculated with precision exactly who was tied in tightest — and by design carried no column at all for an ordinary person tied only to a house and a family.
-
Platforms and the Data Economy — Predictability Became the Product平台不卖商品,卖的是对你下一步的预测。 A platform doesn't sell goods — it sells a prediction of your next move. Once attention, mood, even a coming impulse have all been converted into data, the remainder is finally pushed somewhere it has never been forced before: inside a person's own mind.
-
The Scored Society — Reputation Wants to Close the Books Too信用分,好评率,各种排行榜——古老的声誉第一次被压进一个可以实时更新的数字。 A credit score, a seller rating, a leaderboard — reputation, that old and informal thing, has for the first time been compressed into a number that updates in real time. Reputation was once one of the remainder's last refuges. Now it wants to close its own books too.
-
A Ledger No One Has to Honor — Somebody Still Has to Use It比特币的野心,是造一本不需要任何人被信任的账本。 Bitcoin's ambition was to build a ledger that required no one to be trusted. But however trustless a ledger becomes, someone still has to spend it, and someone still has to decide what it's worth — the remainder retreats from the code back into the crowd.
-
Reputation and Money, Entangled — One Was Built to Forget系列的终篇,回到了第一篇的起点。 The series' finale returns to where Essay 1 began. Reputation remembers everything; money was built to forget where it came from. Twenty-three essays later, the construct still cannot balance this ledger, because from day one it has been using one thing's logic to measure the other.
