Two Relational Conditions

The division is not by person. It is by the current condition of the relation.

The reciprocal condition is these two things holding at once: in this domain, both sides can currently acknowledge that the action-requirement the other bears in the first person is not legislated by me for him and not withdrawn by me for him; and my own judgement can be questioned by him.

What is being confirmed is a relational condition of non-substitutability — not each side certifying the other's attained standing. This is the same edition as the operational layer from the first essay.

The path taken when the reciprocal condition is currently available is called the reciprocal path. The path taken when it is not is called the unilateral path. Unilateral means the constraints run only on my side. It does not mean I control the other unilaterally.

Both definitions speak only of conditions, not of people. The condition is current, revisable, and shown by what has already happened in this relationship.

How a Path Gets Chosen, Without Judging a Person

The mechanism has to be written precisely, because this is where it is easiest to slide back into judging people.

Making no prior determination means only: not judging layer, not judging inner life. It does not mean not checking safety, not checking exit, not checking resource asymmetry and procedural manipulation. Once the protection gate and the basic power-condition check of the previous essay are passed, one starts on the reciprocal path.

After starting, joint deepening either happens or it does not. If he does not enter the mutual chiselling, if every time he retreats to treating my law as something that can be crushed, then in this domain the reciprocal condition is in fact unavailable, and one switches to the unilateral path.

What licenses the switch is that the reciprocal process is currently unavailable — that fact itself. Joint deepening may fail to happen because he is unwilling, because he currently lacks the capacity, because the timing is wrong, because he does not trust the procedure, or indeed because he does regard my law as something that can be crushed. Switching requires only the common conclusion of all of these. It does not require an additional explanation about the other's inner life or layer.

Unsafety divides in two. If it is only that now is not the moment to enter joint deepening, and the protection conditions on subject position, exit, safety and rights have not been hit, one may switch to the unilateral path. If the unsafety has hit the first level of handover, or one of the stopping gates set out later, then pause first, protect first, or hand over — do not enter unilateral intervention.

There is a further reason for writing it this way. A person who has not yet reached that step and a person who could reach it and chooses not to may present the same behavioural signature in a single or local interaction. Long-run relational facts can shift the weight of my judgement; they cannot complete a certification. And path-switching was never dependent on anything but whether the reciprocal process is currently available.

There is a structural explanation for why the reciprocal condition so often fails: a position still running at 14DD has no structural reason to grant that another law carries the same first-person absoluteness as its own. That explains why such failure is structurally possible. It does not establish that in any particular present case the reciprocal condition is unavailable, and it carries none of the weight of the division.

Three Consequences of Dividing by Condition

First, the choice of path is a provisional reading. It is revised as the state of the relation changes. It is not the product of one determination and does not need to be made once and for all.

Second, paths can be switched. Switching does not require re-doing the step of facing it, because the path was always a reading taken during the process, not a classification made at entry. If the reciprocal condition recovers, switch back; if it lapses, switch over.

Third, the name of the path grants no exemption. Harm can occur on both paths, and being on one rather than the other exempts nobody from it. The unilateral path in particular does not supply a duty to endure oppression: the protection gate holds on both paths, and no path overrides it.

One acknowledgement before going on. Economics P2 opened, in an economic setting, exactly this quadrant: I can see the other's position and the other cannot see mine. That paper handled asymmetric perception, cultivation, the acknowledgement of non-cultivability, and exit costs and institutional substitutes. The unilateral path described later is the same quadrant landing on the conflict-handling side. Those conclusions are used directly here, not re-established.

What Starting on the Reciprocal Path Looks Like

Take those two again. The protection check passes — nobody is controlling anybody's money, nobody's contacts are being cut, either of them could leave the flat tomorrow. So one starts on the reciprocal path. Not because they are good people. Because nothing yet shows the condition is unavailable.

Starting means something quite small: I say what my end actually is, and I stay available to be asked why. Not a demand, not a case, not an argument built to win. And then I watch one thing only — whether what comes back engages the thing I said, or replaces it.

Suppose it engages. He says he had not known it was about being treated as though not there; he had thought it was about the money. The reciprocal condition is available. Stay. Suppose instead that every time, what comes back is that I am being difficult, or that this is not the moment, or that if I really cared about him I would not be raising it. Then in this domain, now, joint deepening is not happening.

And here is the whole point of writing it this way: at that moment I do not have to decide what he is. I do not have to conclude that he is incapable of it, or unwilling, or running on a lower layer, or does not respect me. I have to conclude one thing, and it is a thing about the process rather than about him: this is not currently working. That is enough to switch.

The difference is not cosmetic. A conclusion about the process can be revised next month without anybody having to be wrong. A conclusion about the person has to be defended, and defending it turns every later piece of evidence into either confirmation or an exception.

Three Places This Is Not the War Treatise

With that in place the difference from the SAE War Treatise can be stated. That treatise handles the extreme state under the pressure of systemic ends; this one handles two laws meeting at personal scale. Three differences shape everything that follows.

First, first-person responsibility cannot be transferred to someone else. In a personal conflict the one who decides, the one who executes and the one who bears it need not be the same life, and the harm may land on a third person. What can be secured here is one sentence only: I cannot transfer the first-person responsibility for my own action to anyone else.

Second, there is no unified, ritualisable boundary of wartime. Unlike that treatise, there is no clean division of wartime and peacetime. But while a conflict is not yet activated, procedures can still be built, ways of exiting can still be agreed, third-party mechanisms can still be set up.

Third, there is no ritual of termination. A conflict often just stops being mentioned. Dragging it on without ending very easily becomes the default path. When the third constraint is set out later, this will weigh far more heavily than it does in the War Treatise.

Two names also need placing. A state in which the thing has simply not formed into a situation needing handling is non-activation. It belongs to the stretch before the conflict, and is not one of the moves available on the unilateral path later. And drawing on the asymmetry inside a relationship belongs, here, to the question of means and power addressed by the second constraint; its handover is the first level of the previous essay.

What the Division Is For

The reason for insisting that the division is by condition rather than by person is not delicacy. It is that the alternative does not work. A division by person requires me to determine which layer the other runs on — and every instrument for that determination has already been sealed: I cannot certify his arrival, I cannot take my three checks and apply them to him, and this treatise gives no test for his layer at all.

Divide by person and the treatise would need a determination it has forbidden itself to make. Divide by condition and it needs only what is already visible: whether joint deepening is happening in this relationship, now.

There is a cost to it, and it should be said. A reading that is provisional gives no rest. One does not get to conclude, once, what kind of person this is and act accordingly forever. The condition has to be read again as the relationship goes on. That is tiring, and it is the price of not holding a court over someone in one's own head.
