What Is Yours to Answer For?
How Did This Become My Job?
A handover due on Friday, a manager saying “we have always done it this way,” a role you occupy without endorsing everything it asks. Before asking whether you are responsible enough, ask how this became yours to answer for.
Imagine taking over a small department. On the desk are a laptop, a set of keys, and a list that must be completed before the end of the month. You ask who decided what belongs on it. Your predecessor says it has always been this way. You ask why two particular items belong to you. He seems surprised: aren't you the person in this position now?
That sounds like the end of the conversation. You may even begin apologizing for being difficult. Yet you have not asked whether the work deserves care. You have asked an earlier question: how did this particular demand become yours to answer for? Being conscientious cannot settle the question of what you have undertaken.
Several things may have accumulated on the same desk: unfinished work, reasonable hopes, favors, instructions, and obligations attached to this appointment. Their proximity does not make them identical. Separating them is not necessarily a way to do less. It is a way to know what you are doing.
An expectation needs more than disappointment
A colleague hopes you will reorganize an old archive. She needs help and you know how to provide it. Neither fact alone establishes that this is work she can require from you. What arrangement places it within your appointment? What does it include, and what would count as completing it? A genuine need can matter without answering all those questions.
The inventory handover is different. In this imagined arrangement, your appointment specifically includes checking the stock before the month closes. The scope, the person entitled to direct the work, and the means of questioning an instruction can be identified. This is not merely someone's wish. An identifiable demand has become operative in this particular appointment.
The paper calls this becoming operative registration. It need not mean filling in a form, and a name on a form is not sufficient. It concerns a demand actually entering this person's situation within the relationship. A document can record that event, or describe something that never became effective. The document and the operative relation are not identical.
You may dislike the arrangement. That does not, by itself, make the demand imaginary. Registration need not be voluntary in every instance; personal disagreement alone cannot establish that no operative relation exists. Nor does the fact that a demand is operative establish that its content deserves approval. We need room to describe a requirement we really face without pretending that it has become our own conviction. The alternatives cannot be limited to wholehearted endorsement or complete nonexistence.
Paperwork alone will not settle this either. A handbook may contain a provision never applied to your appointment. A formally named institution may lack the recognition, procedures, or actual support needed for its demands to operate in the relevant way. But the absence of a recent punishment proves little on its own. An arrangement can remain effective without somebody exercising every available sanction. The question concerns the actual relationship, not how official the paper looks or how angry a manager sounds.
There is also a boundary before this inquiry begins. A kidnapper can issue a clear instruction and force someone to change course. That does not turn the instruction into the hostage's job. The account here concerns demands grounded in functioning rights positions and the relations through which they operate. Bare force does not acquire that standing simply by being effective.
Distinguishing force from accountability does not make a threatened person safe. A better description is not a rescue mechanism. It does prevent an additional mistake: describing someone already under coercion as merely failing to do their duty. Practical protection still requires arrangements that work outside the sentence.
The chair does not inherit every unfinished story
Being ‘the person in this position’ can mean three different things. There is the organizational function, there is the individual, and there is that individual's particular appointment within the function. A position can outlast its holder. One person can leave and return years later. Neither the continuing title nor the familiar name makes every appointment the same event.
Your predecessor's failure to report a transaction does not become your historical act because you occupy the same chair. But that is distinct from whether you have now been assigned to investigate the old accounts. An earlier event may supply the subject matter of a new demand. Its age alone proves neither that the new demand has a source nor that it cannot have one.
The reverse shortcut is no better. A changed company name, a new owner, or a different office does not automatically end every existing arrangement. We have to ask whether the appointment and its operative relations continue. Changing a carrier is not necessarily changing the instance of accountability it supports.
Several demands can also coexist within one appointment. The inventory is a one-time deliverable. Another requirement concerning the handling of information may continue under its own specified conditions. Finishing the first does not complete the second. Keeping the position does not make a finished deliverable permanently unfinished either. Each demand needs enough particularity to have a life of its own.
Tracing a source is therefore not a clever synonym for refusing. It may reveal an unsupported instruction. It may also establish that a piece of work really has been assigned. The inquiry offers no advance guarantee that you will like the result. It asks each demand to identify who issues it, through which authority and arrangement, to whom, and with what content.
Carrying a demand is not yet carrying it out
The company issues the inventory requirement. It becomes operative in your appointment. You later perform the handover. These are three states along one route, not three unrelated demands. The last two are on your side: carrying something that calls for an answer, and actually answering it.
When the work is done, the distinction may seem unnecessary. When it is missed, it matters. The deadline passes without a completed list. The act has not occurred, yet something can still be identified as unfulfilled. That is possible because the requirement was distinct from its performance. But the reasoning runs only one way. Someone's disappointment cannot establish that an applicable requirement existed in the first place.
Performance need not be conspicuous activity. A requirement to keep certain information confidential may be met by not disclosing it. Issuing an instruction can itself be an act. The distinction is between a demand, its becoming operative for a bearer, and its fulfillment—not between people who visibly do something and people who seem still.
The list can now be spread across the desk without becoming a verdict on your character. One item belongs to your appointment but needs a more workable deadline. Another is a colleague's hope; helping can be discussed without pretending it was already assigned. A third requires separating an old failure from the present task of investigating it.
Those are three different conversations. They were hidden inside one phrase: your responsibility. You have neither escaped the work by changing its name nor handed your whole person over to the job. You have begun with a smaller question that makes the others possible: what, this time, has actually reached you?
