Becoming Buddha

Han Qin (秦汉) · March 2026

Something earlier essays didn't fully address.

Tang Seng and Wukong both emerge from chaos.

Everyone knows Wukong came from chaos. Stone split open, no parents, earth-mother sky-father. Emerged from undifferentiated wholeness.

Tang Seng too. Rarely mentioned.

Tang Seng's origins: father murdered, mother forced to marry the killer, he was placed in a wooden tub and set adrift on the river, rescued and raised by an old monk at Gold Mountain Temple. Doesn't know his parents. His source is blank.

Both from chaos. But opposite approaches to it.

Wukong: I am everything. The world is me, I am the world. He denies any separation between self and world. His power expands infinitely; Seventy-Two Transformations encode the world into his body; Cloud Somersault cancels spatial constraint. He uses power to erase boundaries between "me" and "not-me."

Tang Seng: I don't know. Don't know where I'm from, how the world works, have endless unknowns. So I must learn.

One denies boundaries. One admits ignorance.

One hits Five-Elements Mountain directly. One walks the western path.

Why "Tripitaka"?

Tang Seng's dharma name is Tripitaka (Three Baskets). Not random.

Tripitaka is Buddhism's three scriptural divisions. Sutra Pitaka: Buddha's teachings. Vinaya Pitaka: monastic rules. Abhidharma Pitaka: philosophical discourse.

Reframed:

First Basket: what I know. Communicable.

Second Basket: what I know I don't know. Subject to discipline.

Third Basket: what I don't know I don't know. Only discussable.

Tang Sanzang's name: the sum of these three recognitions.

His journey west: constantly converting the Third Basket (what I don't know I don't know) through discussion into the Second (what I know I don't know), then through discipline into the First (what I know).

This is learning.

So Tang Seng has direction. Undoubted direction. Not from innate certainty. From necessity to learn. Knows his unknowns multiply. His unknowns contain unknowns he doesn't even recognize as unknowns. Faced with this, one choice: walk. Keep walking. Learn.

Must learn with direction—without direction, can't prioritize.

Must experience trials—without them, won't understand direction's necessity.

Can't skip steps—Third Basket things, you don't even know where to find them, just walk until you stumble.

Eighty-one trials aren't punishment or test for Tang Seng. His destiny. How he converts "don't know I don't know" into "know I don't know." Without trials, no learning. Without learning, Tripitaka's just a name.

Wukong too emerges from chaos. But he doesn't start "I don't know." He starts "I am everything."

Doesn't need learning; nothing to learn. Can transform anything, reach anywhere, beat anything. "Not knowing" doesn't exist in his world.

So his first trial comes directly. Not on the journey. Five-Elements Mountain.

Heavenly Rampage: not a trial. Necessary consequence of boundary-denial. First trial: the palm. First encounter with unknowing—doesn't know he never left the palm.

Wukong doesn't go on the journey by choice. Guanyin directs him.

What does Guanyin show him?

Three things: you need learning. You need direction. You need shared suffering.

Wukong has none of these. Power, but doesn't know he needs learning. Strength, but no direction. Can beat everything, never shared suffering.

Guanyin points to Tang Seng. Saying: what you lack, he has. Go follow him.

One Face, Two Sides

So not Tang Seng's team leading.

Tang Seng and Wukong: two-faced unity leading.

Two directions from chaos. One brings power—I can do everything. One brings recognition's limit—I don't know too much.

They have tension. Power and knowing naturally create tension. Power: "I can solve." Knowing: "you sure you understand the problem?" Power: "just fight." Knowing: "you understand what you're fighting?"

They also create force. When Wukong's power unfolds along Tang Seng's direction, when Tang Seng's knowing deepens through Wukong's power—the two faces unite; the system truly runs.

They carve from two directions.

Wukong carved: "you're not everything." Each trial: your power has limits. See demons, can't see causality behind. Beat opponents, can't beat your own judgment.

Tang Seng carved: "your unknowns exceed expectations." Each trial expands his Third Basket. Thought he knew good and evil, White-Bone says no. Thought he knew direction, False-Spirit-Mountain says no. Thought persistence suffices, Daughter-Kingdom says persistence itself needs understanding.

Bidirectional carving. Bidirectional non-doubt.

Wukong finally doesn't doubt: my power has limits, that's fine.

Tang Seng never doubts: I must keep learning.

Becoming Buddha

Wukong titled Victorious Buddha Fighting. "Victorious Fighting" intact. Powers whole. Learned not to release power but to deploy it in order. Not "can so fight," but "can not-fight so don't, must-fight so fight."

Headband vanished. Not that the unyielding thing departed. Wukong's entire operation already coexists with it. No reminder needed.

Tang Seng titled Sandalwood Meritorious Buddha. His direction never wavered. Didn't finish learning—Third Basket always there. Confirmed: this path can't be walked to end. And unfinishability is walking's meaning.

Becoming Buddha: not reaching endpoint. Learning a way of walking. A way to walk forever.

The Unyielding Thing

This series says one constant thing.

Stone splitting day, monkey emerged, "not-monkey" also emerged simultaneously. Essay two noted this.

Seventy-Two: power expands. Lifetime of expansion, "not-monkey" equals stone-splitting day. Essay two said so.

Palm. Somersaulted 108,000 li. Never left.

Mountain. Pressed five hundred years. Unyielding.

Headband. Chanted dozens. Ached dozens.

Eighty-one. Carved eighty-one times.

The unyielding thing remains throughout. Can't destroy it yourself. Others can't either. Pressed five hundred years, it remains. Chanted dozens, it remains. Carved eighty-one times, it remains.

Because as long as you're a being split from chaos, as long as you're not chaos itself, it's there. Can develop power, expand knowing, convert thousands of "don't-know-I-don't-know" to "know-I-don't-know." But ten thousand remain.

It's always there.

So what?

Pretend it doesn't exist. That's the Rampage.

Get pinned motionless. That's the Mountain.

Walk repeatedly through tension with it. That's the journey.

Or make it the goal. Don't destroy, don't control, don't pretend it's absent. Deploy all your power toward it. Coexist with it.

Fourth path: Buddhahood.

"Always there" isn't despair. It's direction.

Learning's boundless. Because boundless, learning has meaning. Finish learning, you've completed work. Boundless means learning is eternal unfolding.

Wukong finished the first step. Became Buddha.

But this first step, we're still walking.
