Four Saints Test the Meditation Heart
前面四难——三打白骨精，六耳猕猴，女儿国，小雷音寺——讲的是凿。凿开你以为你知道的东西。凿开你跟你能力之间的关系。凿开你对方向的盲区。
从这一篇开始，讲另一种难。
不是凿了。是碰到了你凿不动的东西。物自体。直接出现在你面前，以各种不同的面目。你的能力在它面前不好使。不是该不该用的问题了。是用了也没用。
四圣试禅心。第一个物自体。
故事
四个菩萨——黎山老母，观音，文殊，普贤——变成一个母亲和三个女儿，在路边设了一户富贵人家。对取经团队说：这里有房有地有钱有貌美的女儿，不如留下来入赘，不用去西天吃苦了。
唐僧不动。 悟空不动。 沙僧不动。
八戒动了。
他嘴上说不行不行我们还要取经，身体已经在往那边走了。他偷偷去找人家说要入赘。选哪个女儿？三个都要。被吊在树上过了一夜。
第二天早上，富贵人家消失了，地上留了一张帖子，写着四位菩萨的名字。是试探。
八戒出了丑。大家笑了一场。继续走。
很多人把这一难读成喜剧。八戒搞笑。好色。丢人。教训了一顿继续上路。
但这一难的结构比它表面上看起来沉重得多。
八戒的物自体
第五篇说过，八戒的法号是悟能。他的命题是：破掉欲望层面的驱力，找到更高层次的动能。
四圣试禅心给了八戒一个标准的考题。美女，富贵，安稳，不用再走了。这些正好是他最想要的东西。
他过不去。
不是差一点过去。是完全过不去。其他三个人站在原地不动，他一个人往前凑。他不是挣扎了半天然后失败了。他几乎没有挣扎。刺激来了，反应出去，中间没有任何停顿。
第六篇讲过悟空被紧箍咒逼出了一个间隙——"能"和"做"之间多了一个空间。八戒在四圣试禅心这里完全没有这个间隙。欲望来了，他就去了。从欲到行，中间是直通的。
这不是意志力弱。这是结构上的不同。悟空的命题是"空"——用和不用之间的自由。八戒的命题是"能"——驱力要升级。悟空被五行山压过，被紧箍咒磨过，他的间隙是被凿出来的。八戒没有经历过同等强度的凿。流沙河不算——流沙河罚的是沙僧，不是八戒。天蓬被贬也不算——被贬是换了个地方，不是被压在一个你动不了的东西下面五百年。
八戒没有自己的五行山。
欲望对八戒来说，就是他的物自体。不是他的弱点。弱点是可以克服的。物自体是凿不动的。你站在它面前，你所有的本事——三十六变，九齿钉耙，天蓬元帅的武力——全部没用。因为这些本事不在欲望这个维度上。你打得赢妖怪，打不赢自己想留下来的念头。
其他人怎么过的
唐僧不动。因为他的命题不在这里。他的方向太强了，美女和富贵不构成真正的诱惑。女儿国是唐僧的试探，因为女儿国的国王是真心的。四圣变的美女不是真心的，唐僧甚至不需要做选择。
悟空不动。他大概率看穿了——这是菩萨变的，是试探。他的火眼金睛在这里好使。而且他的命题是"空"，不是"能"。美女对他不构成考题。这不是他的物自体。
沙僧不动。净。他的默认状态就是不动。这一难不触动他，跟大多数难不触动他是一样的。他的净在这里是有效的。
只有八戒。满心欢喜地一头栽进去。
团队的困境
八戒被吊在树上，出了丑。大家笑他一顿。但问题没有被解决。
问题是什么？问题不是"八戒好色"。问题是：团队里有一个人，在某个维度上过不去。
不是这一次过不去。是这个维度上他永远过不去。四圣试禅心只是让这件事变得公开了。但八戒从高老庄开始就是这样的。他想女人，想安稳，想回家。这不是一个偶尔犯的错误。这是他的结构。
那团队怎么办？
不带他了？那以后遇到其他难，别人也在某个维度上过不去，也不带了？悟空过不去六耳猕猴那种"为什么你是你"的问题的时候，不带了？唐僧在小雷音寺全信的时候，不带了？
每个人都有自己凿不动的东西。八戒的只是最明显的。
带？怎么带？八戒的成长只能他自己来。你不能替他过这个关。你可以笑他，可以骂他，可以把他吊在树上羞辱他。但你不能钻进他的脑子里帮他把欲望升级成更高层次的动能。那是他自己的事。
那他不成长呢？等他？整个团队停下来等八戒想通了再走？唐僧等得起吗？灵山等得起吗？
不带，团队缺一块。 等，团队停了。 不等，团队裂了。
三条路都走不通。
第三种选择
西游记的回答是：都不。
不开除八戒。不等他。也不假装这个问题不存在。
笑他一顿，继续走。
这个回答看起来像敷衍。但它是唯一可行的回答。
你带着一个在某个维度上过不去的人继续走。你不指望他在这个维度上突然开窍。你接受他是这样的。你接受你的团队里有一个人在这个位置上凿不动。你接受这是你的团队的物自体——不是八戒一个人的，是整个团队的。
团队的物自体是什么？是团队里的人不可能同速成长。
有人在这一难里过去了，有人过不去。有人在能力的维度上强，在欲望的维度上弱。有人什么维度都中等。你不可能组一个所有人在所有维度上都完美的团队。这种团队不存在。
你只能带着不完美走。带着八戒走。带着他的好色，他的偷懒，他的动不动就想回高老庄。带着这些继续往西走。
这不是妥协。这是跟物自体共在的另一种形态。
第八篇说过，你不能消灭那个凿不动的东西。你只能跟它共在。那篇讲的是悟空跟自己的物自体共在。四圣试禅心讲的是团队跟团队的物自体共在。
八戒知不知道
最后一个问题。
八戒被吊在树上一夜。第二天被解下来，知道了是菩萨试探。他出了丑。
他有没有因此改变？
没有。
后面的路上他还是一样。见了女人还是走不动道。想吃想睡想回家。什么都没变。
但他知道了一件事：别人看见了。
在四圣试禅心之前，八戒可以假装自己跟其他人一样。大家都在走，我也在走。我偷偷想一下高老庄，没人知道。
四圣试禅心之后，不能假装了。他的物自体被公开了。所有人都看见了：八戒在这个维度上过不去。
被看见这件事本身，就是一种凿。不是凿他的欲望——那个凿不动。是凿掉了他的遮掩。他没有变。但他知道别人知道了。
这也是一种从第三藏到第二藏的移动。他不知道自己不知道自己的欲望有多强。现在他知道了。他知道了不等于他能改。但他知道了。
"知道了也改不了"——这就是物自体。你面对它。你带着它走。你不假装它不在。
八戒带着他的物自体走完了全程。没有成佛。封了净坛使者。但他走完了。
带着凿不动的东西走完全程。这本身就是一种回答。
Four trials carved before—Three Trials, Macaque, Kingdom, False Temple—show the carving: opening what you think you know, what binds your power to yourself, your blind spots about direction.
From here, another kind of trial.
Not carving—hitting what can't be carved. Noumena. Appearing before you in various forms. Your power doesn't work against it. Not whether to use it—using it won't help.
Four Saints. The first noumenon.
The Story
Four Bodhisattvas—Lishun Mother, Guanyin, Manjushri, Samantabhadra—become a mother and three daughters at a wealthy house on the road. They tell the pilgrims: stay here, marry in, no need for the painful west.
Tang Seng doesn't move. Wukong doesn't move. Sandy doesn't move.
Bajie moves.
His mouth says no, no, we must journey, but his body walks toward them. Sneaks over asking to marry in. Which daughter? All three. Hung in a tree overnight.
Morning, the house vanishes. A note remains, naming the four Bodhisattvas. A test.
Bajie shamed. Everyone laughs. Walk on.
Many read this as comedy. Bajie's funny. Lustful. Embarrassed. Corrected and continuing.
But the structure weighs far more.
Bajie's Noumenon
Bajie's dharma-name is Comprehending Ability. His task: break desire-level drives, find higher dynamism.
Four Saints poses the question perfectly. Beautiful women, wealth, stability, no more walking. Exactly what he wants most.
He can't pass.
Not almost passing. Can't at all. Three stand still; he alone steps forward. He doesn't struggle then fail. He barely struggles. Stimulus comes, response goes, nothing between.
Recall: Wukong's headband forced a gap—space between can and do. Bajie has none of this. Desire comes, he goes. From wanting to acting, direct line.
Not weak willpower. Structural difference. Wukong's task is "emptiness"—freedom between using and not. Bajie's is "ability"—upgrading drive. Wukong was pressed, worn by headband, his gap was carved. Bajie's never faced equivalent carving. Sandy's trial doesn't count—it punished Sandy, not Bajie. Being demoted isn't being pressed under an immovable thing for five hundred years.
Bajie has no Five-Elements Mountain of his own.
For Bajie, desire is his noumenon. Not weakness—weaknesses are overcome. Noumena can't be. You face it, all your powers—thirty-six transforms, nine-pronged staff, marshal strength—useless. Not on desire's dimension. You beat demons but not your own wanting to stay.
How the Others Pass
Tang Seng unmoved. His task isn't here. His direction too strong; wealth doesn't tempt. Kingdom tempts because the Queen is sincere. These maidens aren't—he doesn't even choose.
Wukong unmoved. He likely sees through—Bodhisattvas testing him. His golden vision works. His task is emptiness, not ability. These don't challenge him. Not his noumenon.
Sandy unmoved. Purity. His default state. This trial doesn't touch him any more than others. His purity works here.
Only Bajie. Gleefully tumbles forward.
The Team's Dilemma
Bajie hung in a tree, shamed. Everyone laughs. But the problem isn't solved.
What's the problem? Not Bajie's lust. A person in the team can't pass one dimension.
Not this once. Ever, on this dimension. Four Saints just makes it public. From High Lao Estate onward, he's wanted women, comfort, home. Not occasional failure—his structure.
What does the team do?
Drop him? Later, others can't pass one dimension—drop them? Wukong couldn't answer Macaque's "why are you you"—drop him? Tang Seng was credulous at False Temple—drop him?
Everyone has something they can't carve. Bajie's is just most obvious.
Keep him? How? His growth only he can do. You can't cross it for him. Laugh, scold, hang him in shame. But you can't rewire his mind to upgrade desire to higher dynamism. That's his alone.
What if he doesn't grow? Wait? Whole team stops until Bajie figures it out? Can Tang Seng wait? Can Spirit Mountain?
Drop him—team's incomplete. Wait—team stops. Don't wait—team splits.
All three fail.
A Third Choice
Journey answers: none.
Don't drop Bajie. Don't wait. Don't pretend the problem doesn't exist.
Laugh a moment, keep walking.
Looks like evasion. But it's the only viable answer.
Carry someone who can't pass one dimension. Don't expect sudden insight on his. Accept him as is. Accept your team has someone here who can't carve past. Accept this is your team's noumenon—not his alone, the team's.
What's team noumenon? People can't grow at the same rate.
Some pass this trial, some don't. Some strong in power, weak in desire. Some average everywhere. Can't assemble a team perfect on all dimensions. Doesn't exist.
Carry imperfection. Carry Bajie. Carry his lust, laziness, constant wanting High Lao Estate. Carry these west.
Not compromise. Another form of being-with noumena.
Recall: you can't kill what can't be carved. Just coexist. That chapter: Wukong with his. This: team with its.
Does Bajie Know?
One last question.
Bajie hung all night. Next morning freed, learns it was Bodhisattvas testing. Shamed.
Did he change?
No.
After, he's the same. Sees women, can't walk straight. Wants food, sleep, home. Nothing changed.
But he knows one thing: others saw.
Before Four Saints, Bajie pretended to be like them. Everyone walks, I walk. I secretly want High Lao, no one knows.
After, can't pretend. His noumenon exposed. Everyone saw: Bajie can't pass this dimension.
Being-seen itself is carving. Not his desire—that can't carve. His concealment. He didn't change. But he knows others know.
Also moving from third to second repository. He didn't know he didn't know his desire's strength. Now he does. Knowing isn't changing. But he knows.
"Know but can't change"—that's noumenon. Face it. Carry it. Don't pretend it's not there.
Bajie carried his noumenon to the end. Didn't become Buddha. Made altar guardian. But walked the whole way.
Carrying what can't be carved to the end is itself an answer.
