Twenty years after Yaoyue separates the newborn twins, she gathers the adults they have become and orders the ending she has preserved for them. Xiao Yu’er and Hua Wuque must fight until one falls.

Yan Nantian is present, recovered from his years as a cripple. So are Tie Xinlan, Su Ying, and Lianxing. None can simply stop the duel. Yaoyue has reached the ninth level of her art and fought Yan to a standstill.

The only two people inside the arrangement are the brothers. Each enters having secretly chosen to lose.

The difficulty of losing convincingly

Hua has promised Tie Xinlan that he will die by Xiao Yu’er’s hand. He cannot conceive of disobeying Yihua Palace outright, so he will obey the form of the command and reverse its result.

Xiao Yu’er has prepared a different answer: a drug from Wan Chunliu that will make him appear dead. Both men must hide their intention. An obvious surrender would be interrupted. They have to fight seriously enough to deceive the woman who has imagined this scene for two decades.

Winning requires defeating another person. Losing this way requires protecting him while making the protection look like combat.

The woman who breaks her own plan

Lianxing finally tries to intervene. Yaoyue freezes her and reminds her why this day exists: Jiang Feng and Hua Yuenu must somehow regret choosing one another.

With the last force she possesses, Lianxing shouts that the fighters are brothers. Yaoyue kills her.

It is easy to call Lianxing’s original invention a mistake. That judgment forgets the babies who would have died in the next moment. Her plan was a bridge built while the ground was collapsing. The tragedy is that a temporary lie became someone else’s twenty-year purpose. Lianxing dies removing the bridge after everyone has crossed it.

The destination arrives—and disappears

Xiao Yu’er falls under Hua’s sword. Believing him dead, Hua stands holding the weapon with which he has apparently fulfilled the whole meaning assigned to his upbringing.

Now Yaoyue tells them everything: their parents, their birth, their relation, and her design. This confession is meant to complete revenge. Then the corpse sits up.

Xiao Yu’er’s false-death medicine has done more than preserve his body. It has induced Yaoyue to surrender the one secret that gave her power over both men. The facts cannot be put back. The brothers stand together. Yaoyue laughs, takes Lianxing’s body, and disappears into the mist.

Every step but the last

The costs can now be counted: two parents dead; two children divided; Yan Nantian broken for years; the valley’s villains destroyed by one another; Jiang Biehe exposed; his and Jiang Yulang’s martial arts disabled; Lianxing killed; Yaoyue’s life consumed by an ending that never occurs.

The plan has not failed through carelessness. Its earlier stages work with terrible precision. Yaoyue controls where the boys live, what they learn, what they are told, what they never hear, and where they meet. She cannot perform the last action for them.

At that point one man is ready to die for the other, and the other has made the same decision by different means.

The one stroke left unassigned

The survivors disperse: Hua with Tie Xinlan, Xiao Yu’er with Su Ying, Yan Nantian still alive, the valley empty, Yaoyue gone with her sister’s body.

From birth, the twins have had names, homes, teachers, loyalties, enemies, and purposes chosen for them. At the end, only one thing has escaped the arrangement: where the sword in each man’s hand will fall.

Each uses that small remainder to refuse the ending—and, without knowing it, to choose the same brother.
